Mother knows best. Or so I thought. But it turns out my mother has actually gone mad.
Aged 75, having, to my knowledge, never owned a bicycle in her life, she rode from Edinburgh in Scotland to the Isle of Iona, on the other coast of Scotland from Wednesday to Sunday.
Here’s the video wot I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo8bT391VYM
She's raising money for St Columba’s Hospice, an Edinburgh hospice for the terminally ill where she has worked for 30 years.

SOLD, very reluctantly, for £550
If you havent ridden a quality cross bike off road you should. So much fun.
Reluctantly for sale my Condor Barrachi Cross from 2005. Only used over one winter (2005-6) and raced twice. I have had major surgery to my core muscles twice and I sadly cant race offroad any more.
Its an injury I've had since before I've had the bike - I've only now admitted to myself that cross riding is beyond the capacity of my kidney-free, 96 sitich repaired core muscles so:

One Lepper Voyager saddle. Honey coloured. Rare and pretty.
I understand it has Reynolds 532 tubing for rails, don't know much more. Looks like Harris cyclery used to sell them but stopped as they didnt think they were reliable.
I havent had any problems with it - it came with my Gaansari (see below)and I replaced it with a Brooks because the Bike is a little small (lest you ask no, not selling it).
The incline on the back of the saddle was pushing me forward over the front of the bars so opted for the flatter Brooks.
No real idea of value. 50 quid?

Brought over New Year 2008 from the US by long suffering wife, ordered direct from William Micol at Aerospoke. Have all the paperwork.
I rode them quite a bit for the first three months of last year, mainly commuting and a couple of fixed gear time trials. Didnt want to wreck the rims under heavy breaking when carrying panniers (yes, I'm a sad sack who rides fixed with panniers and brakes and sometimes even a child seat). Hence took them of early summer and they've been malingering since. Personally I quite like the ride and they're fun on te flat when you have some momentum. Plus they are of course hipster-tastic.
Writing this advert reluctantly as I dont really want to get rid. But a. I'm too old, b. I'm becoming a fairly serious trackie/roadie and I'm pairing everything back to either full on racing kit or workaday commuting c. the clincher - I'm moving out of town next month and locking up an aerospoke at a train station is just asking for trouble.
Photo of front here (below) and the rear is at work, will post photo of rear Tuesday when back at work if not sold by then.
Mounted with a pair of very nice Tufo tubular clincher C Jet specials with valve extensions. Fast. 30 quid each new:
http://www.velomax.co.uk/displaydetail.php?product_id=828 BIg fan of these but starting to go back to gluing inspite of common sense.Just rang BLB who say that current new prices are 305 and 315 for front and rear, delivery in three weeks.
So is 400 pounds with the tyres fair? If not make me an offer. Based SW London would rather not ship, sorry.
-
Oh and, because I am obviously the arbiter of all things bike shop and its good to profer anecdotal impression as considered insight I went into BLB two weeks ago for the first time and Jan told me that he didnt sell tubs as he put one on his bike and it fell off so he doesnt think they are worth bothering with. Go figure.

+1... they good
they REAL goodIn my experience all the London bike shops (and I've patronised 20 or so) from time to time have people with good and bad attitude and there are some predictable experiences as well as the odd pleasant suprise - I've even had good service in more than one Evans more than once. Much like most niche shops in London or the UK (record, hifi, fashion, menswear, bookshops, computer to name a few).
Brixton Cycles really stands out in my opinion among not just cycle shops but niche retailers in general in that all the staff seem to have a good attitude whether the customer is a hapless mummy, passing cyclist wanting to use the pump, me wanting some obscure part and non-patronising advice thrown in or my son buying a new bike. Perhaps they train them. Perhaps they pay them ok. More likely the people in charge have a good attitude, recruit like for like and pass it on. Would that more businesses do the same.
Another recent pleasant find for service is the cycledoctor - www.cycledoctor.co.uk. As he's based in canary wharf he's used to seeing customers with all the gear and no idea so you wont get attitude. A really good mechanic and very reasonable.

I guess the catchment area of these summer shows organised by the council (we have one in Southwark) covers the territory of multiple gangs, who think they have to turn up to assert themselves against one another. Pathetic, really.
agreed, life is too short. A great world city and no one has shown them how to look beyond the end of their noses.
-
Did these guys actually threaten you?
No because the police were there in force. But in the first few seconds 15 of them slammed against the window, clearly backing up in response to the police, and I momentarily thought they were coming through. Had the window broken I dread to think - I would have probably instinctively lunged to defend my kids and suffered the consequences. Another four ran into the restaurant and pushed past the table -but only so they could run to the back to change and leave.
Im sure they werent the least interested in me/us but equally sure that had we been in the way they wouldnt have been in the least interested in taking care to avoid us and four and six year olds tend not to come off best when being walked over by a crowd of 40 blokes. It was all no big deal in reality but you take nothign for granted when you have your little kids in tow. If you have little kids you would know.
But yes, it was pretty mcuh like a tooled up football firm, usually no bother unless you are also a member of a tooled up football firm.

Morning: take 6 year old to herne hill (its his birthday)
Lunch: Pizza on the northcote road
Afternoon: Lambeth Country show and endless fairground rides
Tea/dinner: Very nearly get my kids killed by a 40 strong South London gang and get locked in a restaurant on half moon lane by riot police. And I thought Herne hill was a nice area.Pics and full deets:

Sadly I do own a complete Pinarello Prince outfit - bibs, jersey and gloves! Never worn it though... that Castelli stuff is just so damn comfy plus it survived a 25mph crash without tearing (one tiny hole in the bibs despite the fact i ripped half the skin off my thigh).
were the tunes on your ipod also matching?
Fresh Prince? Prince/sign?

you will notice but can probably handle a double change. I moved from 42-16 to 46-16 with a 14 for time trials. Not sure how much change the 46-16 is from a 42-16 (cant be bothered to Sheldon it) but its a comfortable change without overdoing it. Any more would probably be too much in one step. I also have a 43-16 on another bike and there is a difference in feel between that and the 42-16, if minor.
Easy solution - but both cogs and make em cheap ones,a ddnig them to the collection
