I've used a variety of things, I'll try to give you a roundup.
Rear seat - I used a Halfords one that you can clip off. kids always liked it and it was fairly convenient.
Trailer - Got one off ebay, about £30, kids love it, still enjoy it now, but is cumbersome and useful in quite specific situations.
Tag along - Also off ebay, about £50, son enjoyed it, daughter used to fall asleep on it, have used it to commute in London a couple of times.
Recumbent Tag along - Second hand £85. Daughter has mainly used it, loves it doesn't matter if she falls asleep, wife not keen, wont let me use it on the road under any circumstances. -
Went to the 'pay and ride' session on Sat. There were a couple of guys doing laps and a few parents with their young kids, but pretty empty really.
The session goes from 4 - 9pm and you can ride as much as you like. Sounds crazy, but could do with a few more people as I got a bit bored going round an empty 1 mile course for an hour. Will head back in a couple of weeks and see what it's like.
How strict are they on helmets, ie using your own?

Read about that on the BBC site.

Absolutely outrageous and clearly based on prejudice against cyclists rather than anything legitimate.
Is there any way for the public to complain against such a decision?
Everyone's going mental about it (ASA decision) on twitter, might be worth taking a look there.

You'll soon learn to amend your route as you gain confidence and local knowledge, being on your bike is the best way to get to know a new city.
When I first moved to London I rode a Raleigh Chopper for the first year or so, negotiating Vauxhall gyratory every day, the fact that you're trying to find things out beforehand tells me you'll be fine.

I'm calling myself out here; this afternoon by Brittania Swimming pool, drove straight in front of a guy on a bike, didn't see him until he was in my passenger window. I've no excuses, thought I was paying attention, obviously not, if you're reading this, genuinely sorry I've been thinking about it all afternoon.
