Hello people, I need to find a nice shiny seatpost for my late 70s Merlin. Been told I need 27.1mm (bike shop measured) but can't find anything good new or coming up on the bay (one month looking). How low can I go with the size considering shimming or just tightening really hard, can I go to 27.2mm and pray for some allowance?

Hi there, appreciate any help you can give me on this one. Got my bike back from the shop the other day after having BB put in, cranks attached then chain. It's a lovely late 70s, early 80s merlin frame which I've made fixed using an Eno eccentric hub (don't try this at home kids - very stupid and expensive). The chain line looks spot on but there's a reasonable amount of noise coming from the chain as it passes over the sprocket and ring.
First off am I being realistic wanting a silent ride and secondly what are the likely reasons for the noise (chain tension, chainline, bearings)?

Hi there, been lurking whilst building first vintage looking fixed, this site has been my main reference so thanks. Next purchase is chainset and have been looking at the Sugino 75 as I see it's been picked up by a few of you. I quite fancy this though but am nervous of making a mistake. So the question is, with a total budget of £150 for cranks should I buy proven or take a punt - any reason why I shouldn't buy, what about chainrng and BB compatibility? Cheers.
Looks good from comments on other boards and cheap compared to dedicated bike setups.
