Compass released polling and a report a few days ago on Labour's future in the current electoral climate. Guardian overview here: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/dec/08/labour-big-majority-is-fragile-and-it-has-weak-mandate-for-change-says-report
Tl;dr: if Labour wants to be the centrist party of the UK we're fucked. The appetite for progressive politics means they'll continue to lose votes from the left and fail to secure votes on the right.
-
You note this, but it needs to be emphasised that a lot of these aren't actually done, there's no guarantee they will be done, and we have no idea what the final bill/laws will be. I hope they get done (along with many of their other promises).
He did manage to shit on the civil service yesterday, so there's something concrete.
In any case, when is it fair to start assessing Starmer's government? We've all got a lot riding on him not fucking this up.

What's the point of being ruthless if you're doing fuck all with your power other than being ruthless?
I'm getting increasingly worried about Labour's ability to achieve anything. They seem stuck in some sort of electioneering holding pattern, terrified to do anything that may (to mix metaphors) rock the boat. Unless that is their aim.

Absolutely. My point is that the PGMOL is not without blame here. They're a closed shop of white dudes who seem to love being in the spotlight, have a history of coming out after the fact to laugh about their bad calls with their ex-player mates, and are on the record saying they're looking out for each other when it comes to VAR. These people are not going to be held in any reverential way.
-
Nothing will come of this, but will people consider how fucking awful if is being a ref?
The PGMOL does themselves zero favours on this front, and the media mobilisation to repeat this statement ("being a ref is awful, poor them" - like in the Ronay article you reference) ignores that there are real problems that should be addressed (how on earth is Oliver getting £20k from the owners of city? That's not going to help the chorus of "the refs are crooked" brigade).

I've not finished it yet, but the truly awfully titled "How to win the premier league" could worth a go if you've got any interest in the data side of things (@Chalfie may be the only one).
