Having been riding SS for about 4 years (Terrible FG rider, just can't get cosy with it, no matter how hard I try) I wanted to ask if there are any components that people feel particularly negative about? What should you not buy, no matter how convienient?
When I got my bike together I cut a couple of corners. It started as a cheap project bike, but now obsesses my day dreams!
Aaany way, having had a heart stopping moment as my cheap as you like Dia-thingy freewheel split into my spokes, and dropped all power as I rode onto a fast moving St.Margets round-a-bout I wish I'd known better.
So, Frames, Moving bits, bars, kit, clothes and just about everything in consideration, what should be avoided?PS. I'd like to put a word in for my LSB (Moore bros in Isleworth) who fixed me up with some good mid priced kit and a sugary Cup'o'tea for a very-shakey and bruised rider. There's a SS rider in every good shop.

Don't know if anyone's already posted this but wandering through the FGG I found this. I think it's amazing. I know Fixie's are top end "off the peg", but my god! there's a reason they are craved for.
check the rear featuring the Brooks saddle. IWANT! -
I once pulled the keys out of someone's ignition when I caught back up with them. Don't why I did it. I was pumped on endorphines after the knock. Scared the shite out of the tosser though. I threw them over the wall at bushy park and thretened to do the same to the driver.
I am not a big fella so still can't believe I got away with it. -
Got a dusty (really) old alu MTB frame from the inlaws for Christmas (engineers, the lot of em). Does anyone know a good frame guy who can tweak a drop out. It's an allie MTB with sliding dropouts, Custom built i think, but with a very slight tang on the front edge of the left drop out. Other than that, metal is in good condition, built it up with an early 90's XT rear mech for now with the existing STX headset (remember them?) and it still has a fresh feel for aluminium but wanna take advantage of the dropouts and fixie it.
PS, Old school Royce BB came fitted so I was thinking a middleburn crank? Silver, cos the frame is red. Go the full McRoy!! I'm sure I've got some old steel riser bars in the garage. be great to get it sorted with all the stuff we've forgotten about (like dB Ti spokes and the like).

Cheers ASM, nothing too serious with the knee but it is a nagg. And! prefer larger pedal strokes. Spinning out loads on road at the moment.

Yadda, I'm gonna need some drop's to run 48*18- !!!
AAAANNNnnndd, I saw a couple of guys in Richmond park recently, (I live nearish) (sweet steel bikes!!!), I have an old Raleigh Banana frame but it's a little small for me. good condition with all original stuff (except mech's). I'm 5,11Maybe 6', because it's short it's twitchy, is it worth fg'ing the On-One or should I go out and find a new bike for town? I'm confident enough to try most stuff. Is it more "pure" to build from scratch?
Hell, sorry guys, maybe too many "beginner" questions. I wanna Ebay the perfect frame but if I can FG the 29er it will save creditcard burn (not to mention my Mrs' "you bought that as an all-rounder" comments) can I build a 29er into a good street bike? -

Hello all. I'm currently riding a 29er. It's an On-One so set up as a MTB at the mo, (but with plenty of flexibility available) and with fat old off road tyres. Been riding the old bird for about two years now, but want to go fixed and want to go Road (shoddy left knee at 34!!!) gonna be commuting about 8 miles a day and 25+ at weekends. Having looked around and tried a few bikes the average rider seems to run 42-46 plus 16 to 18. but the bike is set up for 36-18 off roading. In short what are you riding and what do you recommend for a street rider with off road habits. I'm gonna throw Cyclo-cross style tires on there to balance out the mix. Please help.
