I’m about to have a frame powder coated. It’s a new frame which has been phosphate dipped and ED coated under the powder coat.

Having just had a frame I’d had powder coated previously rust through, I’m thinking of not having this frame sand blasted prior to paint to preserve the treatments.

How will it look with another powder coat on top?

I received these last week from Freshtripe, mounted them, but have decided to go for silver theme instead. They are unridden. There is a very small mark under where the stem clamp goes.

Here’s clearance with 700x50 Gravelking SK’s. I have the 2.1 still in the box untested as I can see from how tight these are to the seat tube that the 2.1 won’t fit, so won’t try.

50mm is perfect though, and why I chose this frame.

Cheers, I checked but they don't show 700 x 50mm unfortunately, which they say is the max.

Trying to get the largest tyres that will fit in the Faran, it's a 61 if it makes any difference clearance-wise.

I like Gravelkings (I know) and can either get 700x50mm or 29x2.1 (these seem to be new). What are the chances of squeezing in 2.1 (roughly 53.5mm). Does anyone have any clearance pics?

They are as of v3 or v4 as I understand. Lovely build there.

Well I’d suspect the rest of the frame isn’t too healthy inside either, it’s 10 years old and I now realise it has no rust proofing at all.

Also, who doesn’t like an excuse for a new bike. The Wolverine has identical geometry just with bigger clearances and sliding dropouts, almost ordered, but I’ve just decided to get a Fairlight Faran due to bigger clearances, a cheaper price (Wolverine frame only is now almost £800) and what seems like extensive levels of rust proofing.

FWIW I just called Fairlight, spoke to a very friendly and helpful guy, talked through how I'm building it, and said they still need to chase and face. Postage won't delay it so I've gone for that.

Before choosing a Fairlight I was going to get a Soma, but good local service like that makes a worthwhile difference.

True, but even if there was there's no drain hole in the BB shell.

Fascinating if this is the cause. I'm going to remove the BB and investigate. No way would I have 'aired out the seat tube'.

I've recently ordered one of their outlet Faran framesets with no extras for collection, which I'm guessing are already in a box and ready to go – as this seems fairly straightforward, does anyone have any experience if turnaround is swift? Hoping to collect before Christmas.

I can see now the bottom of the seat tube is full of mud and dirt which is wet and seems to have caused it to rust from the inside out. I think this is down to no drain holes but it’s had a Thomson seat post (no holes) on it all its life though so I’m not sure where it’s got in… I can only think of the brake bridge.

I also think it might have rusted from the inside out, now I look I don’t think there’s a drain hole and the inner seat tube has been rusty. Newer Soma frames are ED coated.

It does, yeah. There used to be a band on front derailleur around there, but I’ve not seen any rust externally. Will investigate.

I suspect also the frame was fairly light tubing, and recall Soma Wolverine frames of this era were also snapping.

A pretty lightly used Brother Big Bro frameset in XL, this bike has seen a few hundred miles, due to since having kids. This is the model with normal sized axle spacing, and was bought new in (I think) 2021. Includes frame, forks, Shimano bottom bracket, and seatpost collar.
