OK, sorry. I lost track of this thread.
I've emailed my friends about a welcome party. It was a speculative idea, so there is about a 50/50 chance of that happening I reckon.
Is almost everyone planning to go fixed? I did 120 very hilly miles on the Dragon Ride yesterday and I'm starting to think that 100 flat ones on the fix could be quite fun.

I'm up for this. I would probably opt for geared, but that depends on the level of macho peer pressure.
I went to Uni in Norwich. Some of my mates have a big garden on the outskirts (Thickthorn Roundabout). I could probably get them to throw a welcoming party (barbecue, alchohol, etc) if we chipped in a bit of cash. Plenty of space for bikes and camping, plus near to a Travelodge or similar. Does that sound worth investigating?

I bought an Adie wire basket. It's cool because I can throw it on to the bike for a run to the shops and take off without tools or faff.
The bracket is designed for bikes with a much larger head tube/stem/stack. I snapped off the part of the bracket which rests against the head tube whilst trying to bend it to fit above my brake (the build quality is fairly poor).
I'd like to fix it, but I'm not very handy, so I wondered if anyone with a bit more nouse had any suggestions.
It only cost £15, so I don't want to spend much money. I don't have tools to braze/weld/solder it back together. I was sort of thinking about trying to fix it by lashing it together with a wire coat hanger or something.
I can provide pics of the broken parts if that helps.

Alas crappy quality and a bit of a random selection.

People have, to a large extent, the ability to exercise freewill. If you're girlfirend wanted to ride a bike I'm sure she would be capable of communicating this fact to you, or whoever else she may feel comfortable discussing it with..
People also sometimes enjoy discovering new things and can be resistant to them at first. 4 years ago, I didn't cycle at all. Now I own 2 bikes, ride 100s miles a month and enjoy it very much. It took someone else to get me into cycling and I'm very grateful.
-
Yay! Awesome ride.
Sorry for the circuitous nature of much of the route. Especially the stretch of weaving through traffic on Embankment. That one was definitely my fault. I quite enjoyed meandering around.
Here's a map of the route as I remember it: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3308138
Crappy iPhone photos to come.
Great to meet lots of you guys. Hope to see you again soon. (With my new bike :-)

I won my girlfriend (also based in Fulham) over by riding together to the park a few times just recreationally. After 1-2 times riding, she twigged how great it is and now does 100 miles a month at least.
Not the best time of year of course.
You'll need a bike of course. We inherited an old Raleigh MTB, she would have objected to me buying one I think, but hell, if it's free, why not use it. Maybe pick up a cheap eBay beater with a half-decent frame and, if she enjoys riding, upgrade it slowly.

Foundry to me is the first place I played in London. I played a 4 hour glitch/noise set on a Saturday afternoon in 2004. No one batted an eyelid. As it got later I moved into more beat-driven electronics. Some guy came over and said "that was really good til the last bit."
Now, the art, the music and the general craziness aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the Foundry is actually a pretty unique venue IMHO. Like Resonance FM, it supports a whole manner of forms of expression that don't have many homes.
A few years ago the council killed their music license and there's been a feud running ever since I believe. I'm not surprised to see the council has won, but it's a bit of a sad day for creativity in London.

Where is the meeting point?
Fullcity, 72 Leather Lane, E1.
When is the meeting time?
Saturday Nov 7, 11am.
What is the route? Start /finish?
Fullcity (Leather Lane), Monmouth Coffee (Monmouth St), Flat White (Berwick St), Troubadour (Brompton Road, near Earl's Court).
That's the current state of play at least.
-
I have a Raleigh Europa which I'm about to take all the parts off of:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/afternoon/3781430881/
It's in poor condition. It has a few dents, lots of scratches, even some rust. The saddest bit is that the headset is also in poor condition (indexed steering), but can't be replaced because Raleigh used their own threading standard - 26TPI instead of 24TPI. You could replace both headset and fork. You might be able to service the headset, but that's beyond me.
You're welcome to have it for free if you can wait a few weeks.
-
My proposal for the ride starts at Leather Lane for coffee, chocolate and doughnuts. Then we'll ride across the river to Southwark Market to Monmouth, then to soho for Flat White, then Brompton Road to Troubadour.
This sounds good to me. This is already way more coffee than I can drink without going completely mental. Conversation on the leg from Soho to Brompton Road should be hilarious.
My route out West from Soho is out through Mayfair, round Hyde Park Corner, around Belgrave Square, nip up to South Ken and then along the Brompton Road. Avoids the smog of Piccadilly and Knightsbridge. HPC isn't ideal, but if there are a bunch of us, we can do a mini Critical Mass :-).

@almac68: If you get know the right people in planning, I'd be very interested to hear their thoughts. Thanks!
@carson, @Tiswas: Thanks for your considered opinions, digging up judgements etc, very enlightening.
@Tiswas: Had a brief Google for Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions. Does this apply to private signs? If it's not standard UK traffic signage, it doesn't count? Sorry if I'm being dim here.
Also, I found the quite interesting Ask The Police site. Like a FAQ for the law. Here's what they say about pesky vegetarian hippy cyclists:

@carson: Thanks very much for a considered opinion. It's somewhat unsatisfactory that this exists in a grey area. I'd love to see someone point out that bike parking in such circumstances is clearly wrong or right, either way.
Lobbying MPs, councils etc to get the rules clarified sounds like a great idea now they're more interested in supporting cyclists.
I'm out guys. I did 100 on Sunday and I need a weekend off. Have fun!
