Its that time of year again......
My cycle to work scheme vouchers become available again. I have thrashed my Flyer until it's ball bags are whimpering. But it has done me proud (apart from brakes and wheels).
Am i truely perverse to fancy this as my next commuting steed ? Or should I just take the Surly.

Seeing that brought back the memories.
This is where I used to ride 'back in the day' - only 20 mins from Liverpool St on the train. Well worth checking out if any of you still ride \ skate.

To the guy on the bling undecipherable fixie I see in Bickley, Your fast !
To the c*nt on the Marin Hybrid who jumps all the red lights through Catford at high speed. One day you wont make it and I really don't want to witness it.
To the guy on the super sexy Trek road bike who I chase up Bromley Hill, respect for letting me draft you up the hill !To the cycling rasta who I see on London Bridge, you rock.

Continental ultra Gatorskins. 1200 London miles, unpunctured ------ Touches large piece of wood
Altura Night Jacket - Bargain and fine in all but the warmest weathers.Worst -
Spending £100 converting an MTB hybrid to single speed, only for the frame to snap on the second week.
Losing my Giro helmet on the train whilst pissed. -

Today snapped a spoke on the drive side of the rear wheel. I blame the weekends curry and ale fest.
Have removed the offending article but don't have a spare. Is it ok to ride to work \ bike shop tomorrow and replace later ? its only mildly buckled.
Or will It do more harm than good and I should get the train with all the other lemmings?

Step away from the BB !
I have a Flyer and have run it both fixed and freewheel. The problem with the bike straight from the shop is that the rear cog supplied is 1/8"s pitch (it's also cheap and nasty) and the freewheel and chain are 3/32". Which sounds terrible.
Buy a 3/32" rear cog and all should be dandy without spacers.

I had the same conundrum only 3 months ago. Wanted Pista 1st, Pearson 2nd but as I was buying through ride to work scheme I had to get from Evans.
Paddy Wagon just didn't feel right and the Lemond was as rare as Hens Teeth. So opted for the Genessis and I don't regret it at allThe frame, fork and wheels are as hard as nails, drive train has been sweet. Bars and Stem etc fine.
You will need to change the tyres and brakes though, the tyres are too thin for London and puncture daily. Brakes need new pads before leaving the shop.Hope I haven't confused you further!

It does come 48/18 freewheel. And you get a 18T fixed cog. But the fixed cog is 1/8" and the shimano freewheel is 3/32", so you will need to buy a new chain if flipping.
The bike itself is fine, I have had mine a month and done over 500 miles with it bog standard with no problems (other than the expected chain tension adjustment and slightly truing the wheels). The brakes are a bit poor and I plan to upgrade the front when I flip to fixed.
Do check for problems with the paint work on the frame, I turned down two at Evans as they had defective paint jobs (Discolouring and what looked like a finger smudge).

Thanks all for your concern and musings.
I have patched the rim up and it seems to be holding. Put the bike back together today, even gave it a little wipe down and feel a whole lot better again !
I think most of south Londons roads are giant pot holes, I go over some that would shake your fillings on a full suspension downhill badboy. I blame Thames water and the cable companys' leaving the roads like patchwork quilts.

I've just left work on Wednesday afternoon, cycling along past St Pauls looking forward to the sunny 15 mile commute ahead of me, then BANG.
It feels like the back of my bike has exploded, luckily there was no large bus or maniac black cab behind me as I was wobbled right of the bike.
On checking the back of the bike I notice a 2 inch screw has gone through my tyre, tube and RIM. Taking a chunk out of my back brake and put a nice long scratch down the length of my seat tube. I have gone through a Continental and Bontrager tire in 1 week. Both with full Kevlar gubbins. A bad week.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10973128@N08/Can anyone suggest any double hard tires ?
I am sick of trying to convince the South Eastern train ticket jockeys to let me on, covered in grease with a broken bike before 7pm.Oh and is anyone missing a screw, as I think I've found it.

Thanks twosheds. The pads are bang on the rim but still a bit flaccid. Not even enough oomph for a squeal.
Went to Condor cycles today to look for some replacements but they said they had nothing suitable and to just pull the lever harder !
I did however notice that they started to work a bit better after I got caught in the rain today, so heres hoping. Its Singlespeed, My commute is a bit toppish and hilly for fixed.
Thanks chaps for all your concern and heated debate !

Help. First post.
I have recently picked up my nice shiny new Genesis flyer, all is good in the hood apart from the brakes. They just don't seem to have the bite I have on my other bikes.
Is there a quick way of improving the standard Shimano Brake pads ??
I would normally buy KoolStop replacements but after laying out for a new bike, the shellsuit pockets are well and truly empty.Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am completely new to the forums and glad I found them - Having commuted on a singlespeed hybrid for a year I am about to the make the leap to fixed.
I was planning to pick up a Genessis Flyer this weeekend from Evans Holborn of all places. Would prefer to build my own as with my MTB and Hybrid but my company take part in Ride2work via Evans and it is a bit too much of a good deal to miss. I now have a £500 voucher burning a hole in my shellsuit.
Has the rest of the bike turned out ok ? as I can fit the correct fixed cog myself - or do I opt for a Fillmore or Paddy Wagon ??
Any help with an off the peg fixed (from Evans) Greatly appreciated ! - Eddie
I live south of the river Hippy its a Jungle out there, They dont all drive Maybachs like the noble hamlet of Hammersmith !
It does tick many boxes and I know it's * certainly* not cool. But I dont give a monkeys about that
