I'm not a big fan of flipping a wheel to have the option of 2 x cogs at the back, that just feels like having a shit geared bike.
I think 68 ish means you're in that compromise sweet spot for hills, down hills and flat .
From the little research I've done, the hills lengthen over the ride and a lot of riders say ease a little ?
We have a good mix of long (10KM) and short sharp climbs(20% +) locally so plenty to practise on and it'll be in 2026. -

My plan in 2025 is a fixed Round the year series. I’ve already completed an SR and LEL fixed and so am moving on to the next challenge.
I have ear marked the first six months of audax between South Wales and Bristol already but wouldn’t mind a back up option.
Does anyone have experience of a DIY and what hoops / regulations/ people I need to jump through/ pass / contact to have an emergency route I can use if I can’t make an organised ride.
Would it be easier to ride a current 200 as a DIY? -

Just reporting back on the Brevet long sleeved wind stopper. After a hiccup where a brevet long sleeved merino was sent I eventually wore the wind stopper today on exactly the sort of ride that makes up 75% of my riding.
100KM up from Cardiff towards Taly Bont reservoirs, starting in the dark with fairly low temps. Then riding through pretty grey weather with drizzle and roads that get progressively shitter.
The to top was excellent with just the thin short sleeved explore base layer on, fit is tailored but very comfortable on the bike.
I see the Brevet range as the jewel in Rapha's crown, very practical, hard wearing kit for long rides in shit UK type weather.
Special mention for my new Van Rysel Merino winter cap , cheap , comfortable and nice and thin. -

A question for those with front and rear brakes: Is it much hassle to align the rear? I would usually only run a front (Dolan PC) but may be getting a new frame with scope for a rear brake and track ends.
I ride Audax and have a fixed SR and LEL under my belt on the Dolan, would you say a rear brake helps when in the saddle along time? I imagine on long descents you can alternate hands and avoid soreness and help regulate cadence a bit more?
Or do you find little difference? -
We are up in London on a course in few weeks and are staying in the Holborn Hoxton. To add a bit of excitement to a fairly dry course we already have The Devonshire, Fallow, Kolamba and Ibai booked for the evenings. Does any one have good central ( or out to Southbank) coffee recommendations?
Thinking of a nice setting and vibe and good coffees. -

As an aside, eMTBs have been a real boon for bike shops, especially those in and around areas of MTB action. Locally (S.Wales) a lot of the shops are stocking many more eMTBs on the shop floor than analog. Speaking to friends that are bike shop owners it has been a real growth area over the last few years post Covid even with the quite substantial ticket prices.

It was a nice low key option and lovely setting, and I found the route out easy if a little un- inspiring as we reached the outskirts.
It also meant we could book a nice hotel for the weekend (the area around the main start wasn't the best for a weekend away) and my non audaxing other actually had a pleasant city break.
Just been to the shop to check it out, spending Christmas making a parts wish list. To be used as a long distance Audax, simple, lightweight bike.
