Yep, got an OG PS4 - I have limited free time so am basically on a 5 year lag (I've recently finished Jedi Knight Fallen Order, currently playing The Warriors, and have Control lined up for the next game - that's how up to date I am!). Am assuming getting a PS5 now will give a small bump to my current user experience and future proof me for the next 5-10 years.

Spotted this rather hopeful article today saying that Gen Z will be the saviour of the secondhand watch market… quite interesting stats about who’s buying from Chrono24 though

Late to the party on this one, but I think Panerai is one of those brands where you have to go with your own heart, as group-think is usually against them. It's an easy target as it's not a "sensible" brand - they don't retain value amazingly well, I've never been convinced by their QC, have heard of some bad experiences with customer service and it's a style that not everyone appreciates or can wear. However, if you go in with your eyes open (and they've got 8 year warranty now?) and not looking to flip it, then it could be right for you. I had a 177 and loved it. I think the Quarantas are a good move for Panerai as it makes the brand more accessible. I'm not wild about the bracelets though - I'd be putting that on a strap straight away if that was me but YMMV.

There's a massive rep scene (not just Panerai - their style is easy to fake, but the rep makers are so skilled now that they can handle anything). The differences between the real deal and the reps is small and getting smaller - they even copy movement details (easier for ETA variants like early Panerai / IWC etc) so you've properly got to get the loupe out to tell them apart. There's a rep forum that does these comparisons with the view that the producer uses the info to produce a better fake. Watchfinder did this macro video on a fake submariner 7 years ago, and they've long got better since.... Makes buying secondhand a real worry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_ZTqC2Yxxs

Just in case it helps - I've got the 5000u. The stock strap is a bit softer than a regular one but, whilst it's probably a bit comfier than the standard, it's not so much as to make wearing the watch an completely different experience. Here's a link: https://www.watchway.co.uk/product-page/g-shock-band-10323536
I've actually got a set of the straps that I'm not using (see below) which i can flip on for a charity donation or something if you'd like? What did make a massive quality of life difference for me was putting it on the bracelet. But the bracelet is annoyingly expensive (and you've got to get different spring bars). Watchway do the bracelet and will sort you out with the bars, but you're looking at £70 or so, which would basically double the cost of your watch :(

Completely agree, the only problem is the impossibility of buying a steel Rolex at RRP - which means for most peeps that they have to buy grey if they want one, making them subject to the corrections/market forces regardless of their reason for getting it in the first place. It’s definitely a good thing all the grey prices are coming down as hopefully means less and less scalpers out there.

I dunno about that - I agree that most will still go over RRP but if you buy get then I think you will struggle to get your money back (and that’s before taking inhalation into account). These are the (admittedly useless) price tracker graphs from chrono24 for the Sub no date, Pepsi and Daytona (model number picked at random!):
Thanks for the thoughts re disc v digital, and thanks @soul for the offer - ended up going for a slim disc version - arriving in a few days. I am excite.
