This is one of my 'rigs' on a tour around Scotland last year. 90s Raleigh mtb given to me by a friend set up for touring using whatever was in the parts bin. Worked really well, no issues at all. My focus now is to be able to comfortable be riding day in day out. I think thatβs more important than general speed. If you need to ride longer distances per day, just get up earlier..
Our route took us via Ostrava, Brno, Bratislava, Budapest, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Mostar some years back. Not sure whats going to happen but that is hopefully in safe distance from Russia.
All the best mate!

I have been in your situation so completely understand your worries. My longest trip ended up being only 1 month but I have done various trips over the years.
What I learn when touring is that you cannot really plan for much, say you have spare parts with you but not the one that fails. I think it is unlikely your hubs will fail and wouldnβt worry about it. If it does, you will find a solution, especially if you are not under time pressure.
I would go as light as possible (not easy when starting in beginning of March) and adapt you setup on the way. You will get more experienced while you travel. There are shops (Decathlon) on the way to Albania so you will have plenty of time and resources to adapt before you hit more challenging countries.
I have done the Balkans in March 2016. PM me if you like to chat about it.

As always: amazing! I really enjoy your writeups and the detailed information about which decisions were good and how to improve if they weren't. I guess you could call it development..
I have been riding Hylex brakes on my commuter for years now without any issues at all and really like them, so was excited to see you using the Gevenalle option. The DI2 option looks neat, curious to see where your 'development' approach takes you.
Friction shifter, the good old square BB, steel stem etc all good for touring.. might just be a case for another geared 'race' twin-sibling.Yellow and black, definitely, the halve and halve one. I would have voted for the simple Orlowski design but the 'Fern' logo is soo small.
