If you look at some mid 50s catalogues and search for 8 speed bicycles those rod actuated front changers normally used 46/49 3/32" chain rings combined with a 4-speed rear (which would have been 3/32" as well). For example the 1955 Dawes Emblem 8 specifically mentions a 3/32" chain is fitted! Same for the 1956 Lenton Grand Prix, also an 8-speed with 3/32" chain.
I would be tempted to use a 3/32" freewheel, maybe even a 5-speed.

Looking good everyone - and well done for all making it.
I got a text from Peter at 83km, so headed out South on the Blue Riband from Milton to meet up - a shame our paths didn't cross :(
Did a nice 40km ride though, still don't understand how I managed to miss you guys as I followed the route. Maybe sometime in the future...I seem to recognize the Grubb Galibier - did it come from Tiptree?
Cheers, Rogier

@7ven Is that ride still on for tomorrow?
I am a bit stuck at the moment - moving to Germany on Wednesday :( and my wife's birthday tomorrow...I could probably spare an hour (hour and a half tops) or so and meet you for the last bit towards Cambridge, or in Cambridge.
Could I get a phone number just in case, or send me a text as soon as you know you are an hour from the finish point... I can be reached on 07858594880It will be windy by the way. I'll probably be riding this, lol
Cheers, Rogier

I really hope I can join in on the 22nd of October - I would have to start from the Cambridge side though ;)
2 minor issues: that's my wife's bday and we are moving that particular week... but I'll do my best!I stumbled on this 1950s bling bling - recognized it from one of Peter's builds.
NOS GB brake cable lubricator :)

I hope the TT is fine :) sorry for the consternation, lol
The Hobbs not too sure yet, I have contacted the VCC ME to see what he thinks. I seem to read J7xxxx on the n/s dropout, if I'm correct that would make it a 1947 - that would be a bit earlier than I (and you) was expecting it to be, so time will tell. I guess I have to pull the forks to be sure

I remember that one @falconvitesse - was sorely tempted :) Coventry area if I remember correctly mid May...
I asked Mark back then as well if he could confirm it as a Gillott, same issues came up like the frame number and the sleeved brake bridge. I was also under the impression the top tube had a slight bend in it, but I guess that was lens distortion.
Nice quality frame though, congrats and enjoy.I picked this Blue Riband up yesterday (and some classic parts), not sure what to do with it yet (besides keeping it)...
Rear derailleur needs to go though! -
All sold now.
@Stevevw - sorry mate, sold it in a bundle deal
@highland_cow - that's a shame, it is going back home :) to Woodrup that is -

Looking at the space between the dropout and the freewheel, you might not even need a spacer @anidel
Are those brake levers from a Dawes? Nice frame, I started on my La Variable last week - have had it now for 2 years and not done anything with it (except riding)... Exciting but painstakingly slow, carefully chipping away 3 layers of paint to try and reveal the original finish :) -
-
@jeff80 I like that Maclean - makes me want to start on my own Featherweight :)
I look forward to seeing more pics with the proper wheels...
Sure no problem.
Yep, move went well - thanks for asking.
And I wish you all the best for the TCR, sounds like a BIG challenge!
