Maiden ride on 1955 Jack Holland
V-CC Cambridge ride last SundayWas really looking forward to riding it, but it was a bit disappointing. A shame really as it is a nice 1950s TT frame, lovely (originally fully chromed) forks and Nervex Legere lugs. Frame is just a bit too small for me at 22.5" - I think I prefer a longer wheelbase as well. As it was not original, the frame and forks will come up for sale, components will go on other projects.

Nice @jeff80 - especially with the original finish and looks like beautiful lining as well!
Wasn't AvT a big Ray Booty fan? I believe he owns a few of his old racing Raleighs :)Good luck at the jumble

Older type front derailleurs (pre 1960) simply didn't offer the same travel in the vertical plane as more modern derailleurs. Many times you see a combination of 46/49 or 47/49 chain rings.
Is there a point to it? Not really, it offers a slight increase in gear range...My first 10-speeds (I am from 1976) came with 42/52 chain rings - again the point being that 10 or 11 teeth was the maximum jump with the components of the day.

Cheers @Skülly for the tip on cleaning those hoods - much appreciated!
The JT looks brilliant in that flam colour - I've heard different stories about Mario, would you recommend him? Looking to have my 51 Macleans resprayed (first ever respray) - I usually keep them looking beaten up, but I would love to build a really nice one for a change and all the original finish is gone anyway...
Rough estimate on costs for a one-colour flam finish?Cheers
BTW - I quickly made a 'honker' two weeks ago for this 64 Carlton Catalina - simply removed the lever from the Weinmann body - and hey presto :) and I will opt for a front brake asap

1953? JA Holland I picked up a few weeks ago.
Not sure yet how I will build it up - keep the Shimano 600EX driveline with 5 or 6 speed or go for period correct? Running tubulars on LF Racelite front hub and LF (round holes) Maillard fixed/free on the rear. Tbh, I have some other fixed gear machines in the planning, so tempted to keep it a geared machine. -
The Raleigh Record Ace had a hollow nickel steel axle (A-16-N)
A16 BB axles can still be had, but it looks like they come as GC and NGC versions (Gear Case / Non Gear Case). There is this one for example on SJS https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bottom-brackets/cottered-bottom-bracket-axle-a16/

Fair enough and nice you still have the Dawes :)
Those Maes Kint bars are really nice, but you have to be careful as they normally would have a 27mm sleeve. The listing mentions 25.4 clamp, but might be worth to double check...
They are normally used in combination with Titan stems... The 62 afaik means they were made in 1962 -
@cycleclinic do you still ride the coaster brake Dawes I sold you long time ago?
Such a beautiful frame and love the wheels - the RRA that is. Agree on the first style GB Hiduminium brakes and get a Superhood lever as well. Front brake alone would be sufficient if you are riding fixed gear.
I know you are a pro, but looking at the brake mounting: is there only a rounded washer (don't know the proper term) on one side of the brakes. If you tighten the bolts for example on the rear brake bridge, you risk squashing the bridge... Same for the front.
As for bars, what's wrong with these? Too deep? Those are Reynolds bars, aren't they...
Not period correct, but you might consider the Nitto Classic drops (picture attached) - shallow drop and timeless look. Vintage option would be Dawes Concorde bars, Strata South of France bend or even a GB Maes bend. -
@Skülly any advise on cleaning those hoods much appreciated. I have some Mafac tops, turned brown...
That curved JT is very sexy - maybe a bit smallish? Love to see some more details from the fork crown.
Will post some updates of my ventures soon, have to refurbish and resize pics first :(
A quick one from my Dutch Union build - sold it to a young chap a few weeks ago.
Scruffy 53 JA Holland, 51 Maclean, 37 Sun Manx TT, 46 Dawes in the planning :)Tia, Rogier

If you live near Devon - a lovely Hugh Porter Super Veloce - maybe Woodrup built. Still at 30 quid!

Vintage Merlin Racing frame - badly listed, terrible pics.
If you live near York, take a chance ;) Looks like a decent frame going cheaphttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281964864324?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Very rare lugged track stem - beautiful item, but already too expensive for my projects...

I DO like the Rudge!
Linseed oil or clear coat? Any advice on applying linseed...
Removed the fork lock, 2-speedhub, you found a "Red Hand of Ulster" chainset - very, very nice!Too many projects :( a 51 Rudge Pathfinder is awaiting the same treatment, want to give it a "raw" look. Another budget build (see pic) in progress of mine - I am trying to keep the build under the 100 pound mark, which proves to be almost impossible.
Thanks for sharing those pics and @anidel for your kind words!

Nice job @Buz - did you have the pump the rear tyre while in the frame ;)
635 wheels with coaster brake? Do you like back pedal braking?Being Dutch I have spent most of my life on this sort of wheels, love them and their durability... Cherish those front wheel nuts.
Again great job and just for fun: 2 pics from one of my Gazelle's - she is now riding around Manchester.

it's that stuff that makes the vintage bikes for me
Absolutely - I started this recently, but now every time I find/buy a bike I try to make a picture with the previous owner. And try to find out when/where they got it, etc... Still amazed John had that bike for 63 years. He referred to it as "his baby, owned from new" :)
When he saw how happy I was with it, he went into the garage and returned with an old shoebox. "Some old tubes and rear axles. Maybe you can use it?"
Back home I found the original Cyclo Benelux 3-speed RD in an oily rag on the bottom of the box, some Villiers fixed sprockets, Renold and Coventry 1/8" chain for running it fixed, Brooks saddle rack, etc... Quite a useful box of bits and bobs :)

Not yet - I have picked it up a week ago, spent a good part of Saturday evening / night to get it ready for the ride. Came with gear(5-speed)/fixed BW hubs on special lightweight rims, non original derailleur, non original rear brake. It was the geared version of the Typhoon in the 50's - lower range Holdsworth, but still butted 531. Removed the rear caliper, 5-speed block and RD to use it as a fixed for now... Good fun.
Picture: the original owner from new, who ordered it as a 16-year old chap in 1953 from 132 Putney. -

It was a Bates indeed (not mine :( ).
Cambridge section from Lode - Wicken Fen - Fordham - back to Lode.
N&V has the rides and contact details in them. I have only joined 3 months ago, the rides are a bit slow ;) but it is nice to chat about old steel and meet some knowledgeable lads.I hope the owner doesn't mind me sharing these pics. I kinda loved the setup with the Osgear and 5-speed indexed shifting.

SOLD :) thanks everyone for the interest and @c00ps for your understanding.
Cheers, R
@stedlocks do you still have the Rensch/Paris?
I recently acquired a Paris as well and would love to see how yours turned out.
Thread is already 2 years old, but you never know ;)
