what would drive someone to get on a boat in to the complete unknown with no way back
There were alleged sightings of Inuits in canoes off the north coast of Scotland (Finn-men) and a heavily disputed account of an Inuit arriving in Roman Occupied Belgium. Contemporary Inuits were asked if it were possible and they seemed to think it wouldn’t be easy but totally possible to make such a journey.
In their mind, you would be travelling on top of a food source and you could access fresh water via ice or rainwater.Obviously getting to Australia is different in many ways, but it wouldn’t have been a moonshot, it would have been incremental journeys of exploration. The unknown would have reduced over many journeys over many generations

I think I’ve said it before but 30 years ago I went to a Wimpy with a guy from uni.
It was his recommendation. “Wanna eat a burger with a knife and fork?”I’m not easily shocked, but it felt perverted like a John Waters film and then not wanting to be a prude…I did it. I ate a burger with a knife and fork off a plate. It’s pretty out there I know, kinda taboo but sometimes rules are there to be broken
-
I hate those burgers and the fucking backward baseball cap cro-magnon dickheads two-fisting a burger taller than their face into their gob with ooze dripping down their forearms and off their chin. Then they complete the bite and chew with so much food in their gob their face bulges out like a fucking chimp.
Knife, fork, plate.

Enjoyed a little session at Lyme Regis skatepark with my son and my (utter ripper of a) nephew
The park is a small square affair on two levels with bowled out ends and corners.
There’s a bunch of nice edges and coping at various heights, it’s a great learning spot
I got my drop ins back on a very small transision. I started to bust out some old moves to embarrass the nephew and impress the old local. Apparently Willy Grinds and Bertslides are not the done thing

Just got through The Daughters War by Christopher Buehlman. It’s the sequel to The Blacktongue Thief.
It’s a series of fantasy books yanno goblins and stuff. The Daughters War is far heavier and less amusing than the Blacktongue thief, but there’s romance and fierce platonic love through the grinding horror. There’s a nice set up for the third book. I will read the next book

The Wolfie:
A snake bite variant in my old local was called “the Wolfie” named after a kid called Wolfie who invented it.
It was diamond white and gold label barley wine.
We once walked into a the unusually empty pub with Wolfie stood amongst a pile of broken barstools
The next day there was a sign behind the bar which read:
“WOLFIE IS NOT ALLOWED MORE THAN 4 WOLFIES”

Throughout my life I have often found myself without the correct tool or with a problem that has yet found a solution.
I was considering this over my latest creation “Hard Shandy” (shandy made with 7% beer, so it still gives you the buzz but tastes summery)
I have been struggling with tendinitis in one of my legs and found that ice packs help. I considered getting some of those ice recovery trousers, but they cost a million quid or something, so I have a plan to marry a few wine cooler sleeves together so I can make a kind of pair of “cryo-shorts” for about a tenner

CSB incoming, Pure golf club thread fodder…
I met David Niven
I was 6 and was with my Dad in Cannes. David was walking towards us and my dad said hello to him thinking he was someone he knew.
David said “Hello dear boy, how is your son? “ and shook our hands grinning.
Dad realised, it wasn’t an old friend, but it was Niven as the legend strolled off down the street.
Paper Tiger was on TV a couple of days later.
So having met both, I can confirm Docherty doesn’t have Niven level charm
