Has anyone used dropout converters to go 120mm -> 130mm for using a direct drive trainer with fixed gear bike?
My trusty Pre Cursa has been doing well on my Cycleops trainer over winter, and as I was thinking of picking up a 2nd had Taco Flux 2. Not being able to adjust resistance on the fly makes any session pretty limited at the moment, so thinking combination of:
- dropout adaptor
- single speed kit & freehub body
- direct drive trainer
- profit?
- dropout adaptor

Looking for a 1x chainset to replace the 3x I have on my retro 26" beatery thing. Something cheap and cheerful so I can ditch the FD and chainset would be wonderful. Square taper ideal unless it comes with a BB.
PFA and context
In Falkirk so unless you're local which is unlikely, posting required please and thanks!

Patio/paving questions:
Planning on getting everything that is there up and paving the section at about 3.6m to 4.6m.
Type 1 sub base compacted down (I was going to buy a manual tamper unless its much better to hire a plate compactor?)
I was going to use premix slab base given the enclosed nature I'm not sure how I'd be able to lay it and then lay the slabs without walking all over it (see here
) so I'm leaning towards this
method .Anyone have any pearls of wisdom on this or gotcahs to watch for?
My current headache is working out how to implement the fall needed for drainage. I know the fall amount, do I make sure the sub-base of type 1 is level with the fall, or when the digging is done do I need to get the fall right there, and then ensure the sub base and slabs follow it? Any resources to help on that part would be massively appreciated!

Long time no update: current garden status:
Fences: probably a third of the way through painting.
Deck: being laid by a joiners I met at the rugby club. I had a freelance job come in that paid for the labour and meant I wouldn't be free to help.
Patio: to the right of the conservatory more or less up to the green painted section. Will be a section of gravel between the patio and the deck as there is a sight elevation change so putting a step in there to take that into account.
Advice needed in following post:

Can anyone recommend a lap/lighting for behind monitors? My office gets the sun in the morning but in the afternoon, it't not dark enough to have the full light on, but enough to strain my eyes relative to the monitors. @Soul you look to have one on his set up (which is ridiculously nice all round)?

Looking for any advice on moving a socket to the opposite side of a wall (i..e. wall is between two rooms, I want to move the socket from one room to another, and just put a blank pate where the socket previously was.
Can anyone suggest a resource on how to do this? I have a rough idea but I'd rather not break anything or myself!

Odd combination, not for the same build.
Brake levers for v brakes. The plastic ones that have been abused since the early 90s are unusable. Something functional and ratty ideally silver please. And that you'd be happy to post this week. Parts bin special! Flat bar, diameter to fit old mtb flat bars but I can always shim.
Likewise for the SSD. 2.5" 1TB or 2TB. I'll probably just get a new one but in case someone has a spare and I can reuse someone elses instead of replacing!
Thanks in advance!

@Silly_Savage that giant colander looks amazing, thanks for the shout on the rubblemate!
Thankfully the immediate trampolines have been unused but the sound does travel form one down doors down. Still it sure as shit beats the noise we backed on to in Woolwich.
@russmeyer @Ducky🦆 thanks for the examples!
We did more yesterday lunch and evening. More old bushes out, wife started on painting the fence and I filled a few builder bags for the tip. Oh, and removed the concrete and stone and plant pot mess they installed, took a lot of hammering a brick bolster to get that into bits.
Had a research to try and get a more accurate idea on material costs and have ended up getting a quote from a local firm to do it. I'm always in favour of DIY but my wife is less keen and fair enough as I'm not always the easiest to work with when I get tired and stressed. And given we've not done a project like this before, learning as we go on £1k ish of timber is potentially an expensive learning curve.
Love the idea of postsaver, just shame it needs a blowtorch to install!
If I loose the battle on DIYing the deck, I might win the contract on building the planters.
Today's probably the last day before the rain comes in so I'm getting the rest of the paving slabs out as far as the deck will go at lunch, then take down and strip the conifer hopefully before we lose the light.
Varnish will arrive so we can finish the wall to wall bookcases in the library which have been a never ending project but is almost at an end. Carpet is in store waiting to be put in and we have probably 20-30 moving boxes containing books in the guest room, so it'll be nice to see that room again.

Right,
I'm mainly going to be using this as a vessel to get information from you clever folks, and also document my progress. I love reading other peoples threads so hopefully this gives someone else some of that!
We bought our first home in October and since then have known the garden would be something we wanted to work on. Our main reasons were nearly all with previous owners design choices but boiled down to the following work.
- Remove existing "patio" and concrete and rock beds & replace with decking
- Remove superfluous flower beds and replace with taller planters
- Turf reclaimed bits of garden (and probably replace the existing grass unless advised against)
- Re pave area with bins and old flower beds for space for BBQ and small shed to store garden stuff
Having had a few solid days of lovely sunshine we took to the task on Thursday and so far have removed lots of patio, one of the concrete rock things, a large conifer (wanted to keep it but it had grown into our neighbours garden an they weren't keen on it either so down it came).
We are now considering what we need to do to prepare the ground for the deck once we've cleared the rest of the space. There is currently probably 60% gravel now slabs and beds have been removed, most with liner underneath. I know the "right" answer is to dig it all up, lay new liner once deck supports are in the ground and relay new liner but if I can minimise that work then that suits me!
The other question I have for you clever folks is this: Mrs Velohobbit and I had watched this handy guide
for laying a deck ourselves. The issue I realised last night, is that we are looking to put this as close to the fence in the corner as possible. This leaves us with an issue getting at the sides to assemble the deck as per video.Has anyone else
a) have any deck making pearls of wisdom for us
b) have any ideas on how to build said deck into a cornerAny thoughts/advice more than welcome. Pics for context and some progress.

New tyres and brakes installed. Tyres feel good, super grippy but anything would be better than the old cracked ones that were on there before. Planning a slightly longer ride tomorrow morning. All goes to plan next upgrades
- Silver wald
- Silver triple crankset
- Silver stem and bars
- Silver mudguards
Anyone has any of the above please let me know!

Gave the frame and wheels a good once over to get the crap off. New tyres arriving Friday, plan to get it all built up and ready for a spin Saturday morning. Waiting to hear back from a seller on ebay for a new crankset and wald basket will be ordered this weekend fingers crossed they remain in stock!

I had no idea on the difference truth be told, twice the price but https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-alivio-t4000-v-brake seem to be more the ticket. Sadly no longer in London, but anyone that would be able to pop suitable brakes in the post so I can ride at the weekend would be preferable to putting money into wiggle!

Brake question:
looking to get some tektro-926al-mini-v-brake for my 26" Raleigh Outland - running 1.95 tyres, worried about clearance. Wondering if anyone would know if I'd be able to run that setup?
-
New seatpost and saddle off the Pre Cursa and new grips. Went to check the front tube as it was going flat between rides and it was a patched 24" tube very stretched! But it held air well enough until the replacements arrived this morning.
Got out Sunday in shorts and a tshirt and went to the pump track about 3 mins away from home. Had the place to myself apart from a few deer and it was absolutely mint. Big grins all round, accidentally hit a few drop downs but lots of fun.
First time in the dry and the brakes are super spongey, given their age and probably quality, if anyone has any spare mini V brakesets let me know. It has definitely left me wanting a more capeable bike BUT I am fighting that urge, going to try and find some tyres on gumtree and head down to the bike trails at Callendar Park if I can make time this week, otherwise will try and find a fun trail somewhere else.
I think if I find myself riding this a lot and really getting into it, I'll try a hire bike at Callendar Park and if that hooks me, head to the classifieds. I can see this getting slicks/guard/wald/dynamo for longer rides but who knows!
-
Yeah this afternoons research and peek at the bike has left me with the same conclusion. I think a good clean and as best as I can adjust the shifting should solve the issue sufficiently. I get very shit up when my chain skips and I lose all connection but hopefully this will solve that.
Tyres and contact points sorted should be good, just need to chose my tyres!

Two rides in as many days, mainly because I misread a text for click and collect and had to try again the next day. Yesterday still lots of compact snow and ice so much slower going, today much faster. Front tyre has a slowish flat, and on snowless inspection a lot of cracking so will replace both.
I've posted in the tyre thread and since then have more or less settled on the Schwalbe City Jet unless there is something with more side tread at a similar price point? Need to decide on tan walls or black too.
Silver seatpost coming this week hopefully as that saddle is just crap. Parts bin flat pedals are a revelation, first time on flats with the little studs and I love them.
Does anyone have a square taper silver crankset (ideally 165/170mm) that is looking for a new home? These cranks are worryingly plastic and I would like to get to 1x and stable before trying a ride that takes me too far from home.
Also some bolt on grips so I can use the current bars until something more suitable reveals itself/I make up my mind.
I'd previously seen some heinously expensive adaptor which looks extend and adapt. I was hoping someone else may have tried, that adaptor is on back order so may need to conjure one of the LFGSS alchemists with metalworking skills to knock it off.
