Yes they are. I use tubs all year round. If you think they are not practical then you are doing something wrong.
Sew up tubs what on earth do you think you have to do to repair a puncture? Carry a spare tub and some sealant that way you can deal with a small puncture and a big one. when I go out on tubs I have a can of pit stop in my back pocket and a spare tub strapped under the saddle. I rarely puncture on tubs but when I do 5 minutes later I am back on the road. Seriously what is the hassle.

change the chain with 5000 miles it will be well worn. I have taken the the chain on my commutor /training bike past the wear limit in 1000 miles, I care for my chains but the way I ride and the conditions I ride in takes there toll. No matter how careful you are 5000 miles is too many for a chain. Your front rings may also need replacing as leaving a chain for that long means they will be more worn than you think.

The Kinlin XR31t and XR22T off set rim brake disc brake rims are excellent. The later is the same price as the DT Swiss R460 well close. I much prefer them over the R460 rim brake or disc brake offering. they are rounder for a start and the offset rim means a longer lived wheel.
Did a set of the XR22RTS OCR rims today on Miche disc brake hubs with sapim force spokes.
Tension DS rear 1200N DS rear NDS tension 780N. On the front wheel this was reversed. That is what offset rims do.Mdcc_tester that Mavic EN821 rim looks symmetric to me. Never had one. Ryde also do offset MTB rims that would be fine for CX tyres but they are even more expensive. I agree spending more on rims does not always equal better.

If the rim is clean enough I charge a £10. Really you spend 5 minutes apply glue one day, then another 5 minutes the next and another 5 minute for the tyre. Mount centre and inflate. It takes 20 minutes and that is over three days. Glue is not expensive and if you use tubs I think you should simply watch me do it once and then do it yourself. Happy to show folk it really is very simple and the tyre wont be comming off in a hurry.
Modern tape are apparantly quite good. However I don't care how good they are I like the process of gluing. Something satisfying about it.

Every Kinlin XR22T rim I have got and built with is perfect. Round and flat even at the join. Dt R460 on the other hand show a bit more variability not to mention they are in an out of stock with madison and therefore you can't build with them anyway.
Importing Kinlin rims from the U.S is not necessary they have been in the U.K for a while.

This is how the major wheel manufacturers make wheels with few spokes that dont fall apart. One of the keys to a long lived wheel is a stiff rim, thick spokes are not really needed.
hovis get a tension guauge. Kinlin rims have a tension limit of around 1200N like most rims. Which rim do you have? Never found one that is not round. The latest XR22t and XR31t are HED round every time. The R460 in comparsion show more radial movement (still not alot).

tubeless tyres on the DT R460 BD rims are an easy install. I did not even need a compressor.
You can run any tyre width you want but I am the kind of guy that would an MTB rim for a 38mm tyre as with a 23mm wide rim they would balloon a bit. That's me though.I used stans tape and stans valves and a track pump with the IRC tyres I tried. Schwable one's will be fine too.

Some progress rear wheel is built tub is now stretching. the wheel is not overly round. I will see how it rides before I try and true it out as it might be O.K. I would have to make some big tension changes to get it round to normal standards so I will just have to see. Brake drop is 60mm which is just right for some very non period correct centre-pull brakes which I will use until I find the right GB brakes or similar.
