Thinking of riding west in summer to get to a festival nr Cheddar. Have done a quick route but anyone recommend the best route avoiding busy roads?
I will be setting off from Reading station and riding towards the Mendips, finishing in Cheddar and staying at the youth hostel there, then head to the festival the next day.

Thanks @Gustav. Just when I'd talked myself out of it all.

54cm but top tube is long ;). I use a bagman and bar bag so plenty of luggage options. Just want those grippy tyres for bridle paths, muddy lanes and fields as I'm looking to do some rides over the south downs this summer plus explore the wilds of Essex, Suffolk and further afield. Heading out into Essex now after recently purchasing Lost Lanes. First kingpin ride in 6 months. Woo!

My two bikes are a dawes kingpin and a dawes clubman so one for fun and one for days out / commuting. Clubman lacks clearance for knobbly tyres + mudguards though.
All these sound and reasonable points very valid that are repeating the voices in my head re: bikes =n+1 and if I do I actually need a bike than can go off road / how much camping will actually happen.
Lastly I'm a first floor 1 bed flat so struggle for space (as well as time and expertise) to do a build.

Am seriously tempted to get a fully functional go anywhere bike for weekend touring, off road shenanigans and plus occasional commutes. Also need to cut from 2 bikes to one, hence want a do anything steed.
Have managed to save some cash to make a long term investment so looking at either Surly Disc Trucker, Salsa Fargo or Trek 920. Anyone got any advice? Salsa Fargo is the most expensive and am tempted with the 920 via cycle 2 work scheme but figure a credit card purchase from LBS would work out about the same.
Any recommendations or thoughts would help!
