Can we have a masks/helmets Covid-19 circlewank subforum now before it´s too late. There´s just so much common ground to cover. Here´s a Canuckistani reporter giving some sensible shopping advice, only to be shouted down by the maskologists, just like any image of a bare-headed cyclist is met with outrage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLufQBKrLjw&t=77s

"Sauna party" eh? Keys in a bowl, wink wink...
There´s a massive gulf between what people in Russia and Finland (banya/sauna is Russian and Finland was until fairly recently a Russian province) get up to in a hot room and what folks in other countries do in a pathetic lukewarm cabin. It´s just too hot (I prefer about 100 degrees C) to shag in a proper sauna. Besides, just about every home in Finland has one, and it´s not unusual for the whole family to get in at the same time. It´s just a very hot bathroom. My father was born in one in the 1950s because the nearest hospital was a three-hour whitewater boat trip away.
I´ve never been to a shagfest sauna party, even in my student days: https://www.warmtimber.com/blog/culture/a-sauna-party-whats-that/
I have however been to a student sauna party and shagged laterz.Finnish business leaders and politicians often have meetings in saunas and give interviews in them. I´ve been to some of those, too. It´s striking how people are incapable of talking shite when their packed nekkid into a hot steamy wooden box.

More aerosol spread modelling, this time of a shopper´s cough in a supermarket, from Aalto University in Helsinki.
Before we get too carried away, let´s bear in mind that this and the Dutch-Belgian modelling that I linked to upthread was carried out by enginerds, with some input from infectious disease boffins in the Finnish one.

I hereby redact everything I´ve said against the wearing of masks by the general public. So much want:

mostly from lycra chaingangs
Yes, although the Lycra lot do respect the official guidance of cycling alone or with one friend. It´s just that they leave barely any room when overtaking. The trouble with couples on sit up and beg bikes is that they refuse to break their abreast formation for anybody who wishes to overtake them.
(Ik moest onbeschoft opzoeken omdat ik geen Brabander en zelfs geen Vlaming ben...)
-
Het Laatste Nieuws quoted Bert Blocken, a civil engineer who specialises in sports aerodynamics among other things, as saying that the Lycra brigade should keep 20 metres clear of each other in their axis of travel.
There´s precisely fuck all chance of that happening. Yesterday I was out on the new F14 fietssnelweg (nice and wide) north of Antwerpen and cyclists were struggling even with the official 1.5m rule. A polite "afstand houden alstublieft" was met with expletives being spat out in my face. Will keep to shite rough concrete main roads or opt for long walks instead now that the sun is out.
From the comments: "In vlaanderen is dat misschien vloeken, maar het virus is atheïstisch." "In Flanders that [curbs on cycling] may well be blasphemy, but the virus is atheistic."

Believe themselves to be protected / protecting others.
This. Risk compensation is just one of many aspects the mask debate shares with the bicycle helmet debate. Shifting the burden of proof was already mentioned. Also, rotational injuries with helmets and lack of training, fitting and discipline with masks are just ignored. I keep seeing people grip their mask by the front (where the droplets are) in order to lift it up on to their forehead and scratch their face.

don't know that Sweden is any less/more sociable than their Nordic counterparts?
In descending sociable order, gross generalisation of course:
1) Danes
2) Norwegians
3) Swedes
4) FinnsMaybe squeeze Ålanders between Danes and Norwegians? I´ve nothing to say about folks in Iceland, Greenland, Føroyar or Svalbard as sadly I´ve never been. I´m an Ostrobothnian myself.
-
we're pretty isolated to start off with
The same applies to the Nordic region as a whole. There´s just so few people out and about and people chatting away (if they´re one of the weirdo extroverts) two metres apart looking at a shared imaginary focal point on the ground 5 metres away is the norm. Unless they´re drunk of course. Also, "bigger cities" needs to be taken with a grain of salt anywhere in the region. To sum it all up, it´s just boring up there.

Send people in earlier so they wont be as ill? WTAF.
First part of https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/04/world/europe/germany-coronavirus-death-rate.html
Speaking from personal experience, which of course is just anecdote I know, is that in Germany healthcare workers are forever trying to persuade people to check in to a hospital while in many other countries staff are trying to think of any excuse to keep people out.

This one of the few areas of expertise or knowledge that I can share with the forum.
Yes thanks for educating us. I´ve chucked the occasional chunk of MDF and plywood into the (red hot) stove. Will mend my ways.
Regarding the tanalised stuff, we are talking about the green stock no? I only know it by the Finnish term painekyllästetty, which means pressure impregnated. From what I´ve heard they burn it in a power station in Germany, at least the stuff collected in Finland. What sorts of temperatures are we talking about?

The last link of yours. The mayor reportedly said they are only testing hospital cases.
Many cases won’t make it to hospital.
Yes my friend was referring to Giorgio Gori, the mayor of Bergamo, who had told a number of reporters that deaths in his city had gone up, year-on-year, by an amount that was multiples of the confirmed Covid-19 death figure.
From a Deutsche Presse-Agentur report: "The mayor of Bergamo, a town near Milan at the epicentre of the crisis, said the 112 Covid-19 fatalities registered in his province on Monday were only a quarter of the total death toll." Many old people, he says, die in their own homes or in care homes without their illness even being diagnosed. Sounds pretty grim...
I too don´t read Italian, but a friend of mine who does paraphrased the reporting out of Lombardia as indicating that loads of Covid-19 deaths are recorded as pneumonia fatalities, which is nothing sinister as it is the final cause of death. Ditto in Germany.
