Maybe my ears don't work as well as the people who come up with this posters. But I don't think I could tell the difference between the sound of an HGV about to pass 3 inches from my right elbow (as per fucking usual) or one that's going to drive into the back of me.

I'm just getting to the end of the build of my first road bike (Ritchey Road logic) having only ridden fixed with strava I would normally average between 16/17 MPH on a normal 50 ish mile route.
How much faster do you think I'll be with gears and a freewheel, all things being equal and working on the idea that gears are to make you faster rather than life easier. (if that makes sense)

A rider in front of me this morning sailed through a red light and I stopped at the line. Car pulls up next to me and the passenger window comes down. The driver leans over and says 'pity you can't get your mate to stop at red lights too'. I look through the window to see him with his phone in his hand. My retort wasn't as witty as I would have liked, but he put his phone down and the window closed.

It's New Forest Sport Sportive weekend and local rag have dusted off annal anti cycling artical and got it out for an airing.

I think they have to be sold with bell, I don't think you have to have one when you riding the bike.
Its a bit like mobile phone use for drivers, technically you shouldn't do it but nobody gives a shit, even when you kill somebody.

The scary thing is them do represent the view of a subset of the country, Daily Mail reads and white van drivers and taxi drivers and old people and racists that used to vote BNP.

You don’t not 'need' a lock ring. I've been running a wheel without one for a couple of years without problems.
Wrap the chain around the sprocket and use the wheel as a lever to tighten the sprocket in place.

I was interested to see that Steve Abraham had been in my local area last night. I checked out his segment from wickham to the top of Portsdown hill and I'm faster, he was at the end of a 200 plus mile day but I'm still claiming it as a win.

I did Ditchling for the first time last year fixed 48x16 it was tuff but not as bad as everybody makes out IMO.

On the subject of chainsets, I'm looking for something a bit more "bling" for my Nature Boy.

Charge plug(s), Genesis Day One / flyer or an One-on , pompino would all be in or around that price braket second hand and a good starter bikes with reasonable components and the frame are worth upgrading when required. Why not check out the forum classified ads.
If your going to be riding singlespeed rather than fixed please make sure it has a front and a rear brake :)
