Not sure which tyres look better....

Made a bit of progress this week. Gears and brakes up and running. Shifters slipping a bit so I added some washers, which seemed to help.

Bought the Galli calipers and levers from @ncjlee (Super Criterium I think), and some Dia Compe gum hoods from the internet. Have got white tape, but that'll be going on last.

I've only got one tub at the moment so need to get another (any suggestions?). But put some clinchers on for a test ride, and I reckon it looks alright with the all black tyres?

Still need a new (old) saddle. I'm thinking a brown turbo/rolls etc. Or possibly a Brooks...

Not clothing, but mudguards are a winter essential. You stay drier and therefore warmer, your riding partners will thank you for being so considerate, your bike will stay cleaner - everyone's a winner. 'Chasse de forme' as they say in the Dordogne!

I've got a single rear shifter in the garage somewhere I think - nice condition, boxed and with little use. From memory it's 7400 - it can be changed from SIS to friction - but I'll check when I get home if you're interested?

If you're used to clipless already don't bother with the light action. You can get them to release pretty easily if needed, or crank them up pretty tight for track use.

I use PD-R540 on my Winter bike/Commuter and on the track. You can't go wrong at £20. Solid connection, durable and basically zero maintenance (well I've never maintained them). Speedplay cleats are £30 on their own...

Just did the training accreditation yesterday. Passed, but they seemed pretty strict!

Just thought others would like to know that they are planning a few more over the next few weeks. Also, basic and intermediate sessions are continuing I believe.

Cheers Woodster. I may go with the Corsa Evo, as I run Pave clinchers on my other bikes and they've been great. I'd probably go for the Pave tubs if they didn't have the green stripe. The bike they're going on is Red and they'd clash horribly I reckon!

Are the Tufo repairable? I was under the impression you couldn't open them up to repair the tube...I'm probably (and frequently) wrong though...

I'm a tubular virgin and wanted to try out an inexpensive tyre - I've read a bit about the Rallys and Conti Giros, but has anyone tried the Schwalbe Montellos? Or is it just worth going for something a bit better?

Just received a lovely Gazelle Champ from @kifla (cheers Mario!). It's in really nice used condition, a few scrapes and scuffs but they all add to the character. It's pretty light and really well put together. I can't wait to get it built up so I can ride it!

I'm going to be building up with [mostly] Nuovo Record - so far I've got an '81 pat NR rear derailleur, Mavic GP4 sprint rims on Record hubs. Will be getting the FD and shifters shortly I hope. Not sure on the brakes? I'm thinking I may go modern dual pivot, so they actually work...

Other parts are 3t Competizione bars and 3t Record stem from @dolph. And Stronglight 106 chainset from @njclee - it's a nice Record clone and it seems pretty light too. I believe it takes a 118mm iso BB though and they don't seem to common, so may have to stick it on a JIS taper?

Also picked up a spare wheel when I bought the Record set. It's an interesting one. I think its a 50's(?) Campag Gran Sport - Large flange, fixed/freewheel. Will be keeping for a fixed/ss build I reckon.

Overshoes and decent gloves are a must when it's really cold. I like the Cheapo Planet X neoprene overshoes and Dafeet gloves. A Belgian hat or beanie is also good.

I'd say a good merino base layer is an investment, just whack any old jersey over the top as it'll get covered in road grime in no time anyway.

Oh, and gaffa tape up the ventilation holes in the soles of your shoes for less drafts/drier feet!

Just noticed a hairline crack in the cage on my NR. Any ideas on whether it's safe to ride, or is it likely to explode!?

Crack is where the cage screws to the main body.

I'm going to be putting a 10 speed 105 group on a 126mm frame. All you'll need for the brifters is down tube cable stops, rear wheel should be fine, only a few mm difference.
