I've finally managed to get my Dahlia Black Jack to flower. It's about 4ft high but next year I'm hoping for 6ft.
Also, after planting 6 in 6 different locations, one of my Cannas finally flowered. YES!

In the interests of mistake-sharing, I lay some wildflower turf in the front but didn't suitably remove the nutrients from the underlying soil. The grasses have largely taken over again but I'll keep you updated. I intend to lay some yellow rattle in October and possibly buy some wildflower plugs for next year.

On the plus side, this is my first year growing Martagon Lily, which are an excellent colour!

Yea, it's weird. The fan was off and underneath something a few metres away, so I know that it didn't just drop off. Our neighbours are students and a fellow barbecuer so I don't think that it would be them.
I was alerted to the temperature drop at 3am ish so woke up, relit the fire and all was good.

Last weekend, I did an overnight cook of some brisket and short ribs.
A fox/ cat/ whatever took my billows fan off and I didn't realise until the next morning. Because I'd closed the top so much, the effect of the open hole vs the fan, was quite a big drop-off in temperature.

You probably know this as you were able to get them to flower but... the rhizome needs to be exposed over the prior summer to stimulate flower growth the following year.
After lifting the rhizome last year, this year was my first year of flowers.

Were you over-zealous with the mulch last August?! Was something covering them?!

Ouch. I seem to have lost 2 Salvia Amistad as well but I'm hopeful that they'll come back.
Re the Tetrapanax, I lost everything above ground but I have three or four strong leaves now. As per "Exotic Planting for Adventurous Gardeners", the Tetrapanax should come back...

After three years, here's my winter-ravaged echium against what it's supposed to look like as per google. I'm going to try and save some seeds for 2026.

Looks like you were right! I thought that they didn't flower until they were much bigger, and that's when they 'split'.

These didn't turn out as expected but I'm still pleased with them. Against my wife's advice, I wore them a fortnight ago for a 'date night', and we ended up in an old school garage rave!

I NikeId'd them after not really getting on with some Diadora Heritage trainers, that I bought the year before.

It seems more like chemical suppression. Twice I've grown two, 30cm apart and one of the two always dies suddenly when they're about 1.5feet high. Who knows!
This is my 2020 effort from my old flat. Apparently 3 year flowerings are more likely to be record breakers!

Same thing happened with mine this year. I'm not sure why.

It appears that you have no issue growing things near the echium. Is that right? Mine have always seemed to kill everything near them.

Finally... are yours grown from seed? I had to go to an open garden in peckham last year, to get mine.
