Yes, admittedly, cantis probably aren't going to be the best for ultra hard-beasts doing thousands of miles at a time and sleeping in hedges, but different brakes for different needs and all that. Some people probably benefit from the simplicity of fixing it for the type of riding they do.
The idea that rim brakes (that served people well for decades) suddenly don't work because Shimano said so makes as much sense as saying riding bikes off road started with gravel in 2015.

I have a 32 year old Klein MTB with Cantis that stops better and is far less of a pain in the arse than any of the disc brake bikes I own. The similarly-aged XT shifters also work better than a lot of modern shit. It's also bright pink which gives bonus points.
We've all fallen victim to Big Bike® propaganda. Good products have a long buying cycle so they have to think of new shit to sell to us mugs.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. My gravel bike is pretty hefty and even a kg matters when I'm travelling abroad with it, so I've been looking at the last gen Red 22 mechanical options (which I have on my best road bike and is also my favorite group ever for various reasons).
I have a 9-42 ethirteen 11sp cassette that I was thinking of putting with a 38 at the front with a Force 1 derailleur - this would give a good range for most road and gravel use. Alternatively, the ratio kit would allow 12sp, but would involve buying a new cassette and I've always been wary of these shift adapters (had fails with a jtec some years ago).
My main decision is red 22 hrd vs cable. I've got some Juintechs already, and hrd Red 22 shifters are also pretty pricey and heavier, whereas cable can be bought for fairly cheap these days. Might also give an excuse for daft Klampers/Growtacs. I've only recenly moved to hydro Ultegra from the Juintechs and I'm underwhelmed by the performance increase and annoyed at the bleeding/hassle when changing bars etc.

Has anybody got any experience with Easton EC90 SL cranks? I need something new and they seem to be lightweight and on sale at R2. Seen a few bad reviews however.

I just installed a 9-42 cassette with an RX800/no roadlink and 36/46 Ultegra chainset. Unexpectedly seems to work fine so not sure what to believe anymore.
Plan to move to 38 1x, which still gives a ridiculous range, more than enough for any type of Gravel riding I'll be taking part in. Being fat means I don't really have to pedal downhill anyway.

Should probably stick with the existing SRAM anyway.

As a pathetic apartment-dwelling millennial, fixing bikes is one of my few tastes of self-sufficiency and I'll be damned if I give that up.
I bought some lovely new handlebars 3 months ago and keep putting installation off because of the dreaded bleed.
