I'm hoping to try out SS trail riding at Haldon Forest over Christmas:
https://www.moredirt.com/trail/South-West/Challenge-Trail---Haldon-Forest/1335/
and have all the bits together to build up 2 bikes for me and son- one 29er and other 26", both steel hard tails with solid forks.
Question: what would be suitable novice MTB gear ratios for Devon hilly terrain? (we're both daily road cyclists). I was thinking 32/16 but some of the bikes on here appear to have smaller chainrings?
I have 16t sprockets for both but yet to get the chainrings.

Lightweight aluminium children's frame and matching 1" threadless forks (steel, both Italian manufacture AFAIK), cane creek 1" hs + alu stem, charge bars, grips, nice vintage Suntour Pro XC brake levers (which will run road brakes) Shimano brakes, Specialised seatpost.
Built up for my son who's now outgrown it. I used an Isla bike sram twistshift group set and 24" 520's Airnimal wheels. The gs has gone back on the Isla and I'm likely to ebay the wheels as they're Harry Rowland built and were quite expensive for a kids bike.
This has been used for a 5 min school run for around 2 years and is in good condition, with a few paint scratches, mostly on tt as indicated but no dents.
Suitable for 5-8 y.oPics of some built up with drops:

£50 picked up from Herne Hill SE24 or I can get it to South Devon if given a couple of week notice, pick up TQ9.
