TBH I'm not sure productive manufacturing is the way we should be going. Competing against countries where life is cheap is never going to get us anywhere except back to pre-EU levels of wages and ridiculously long working hours.
Thatcher was right in investing (time, money and effort) in the financial sector, let's just hope that London isn't too badly affected and as a Country we can still reap the rewards of her legacy. -

My experience was, coming from a very disadvantaged area and when I was at school and experiencing a shitty home life; The message I was getting from colleges and uni's was that only the clever people enrolled at them.
Due to shitty home life and bullying my grades were shite and so college and uni 'was never an option' in my mind. I've now got a masters degree and doing OK in life. When I talk to my peers who I grew up with, we all say the same 'we were classed as under achievers', so the college/uni route simply wasn't explored during our career advisor 1:1 sessions.
Things in my area have changed massively, it's now a case of 'no child left behind', attitude. My son is on the ASD scale, thanks to this new 'can do' attitude he now has a nursing degree and doing well at work.
So personally I think it's the 'can do' attitude that has helped 'under achievers' where I live.
Who has driven this change or why I've no idea, but I'm fucking glad they did and I'm guessing this has happened in other disadvantaged areas aswell, hence the increase in applications from 'disadvantaged' students.NB:
I fucking hate the term 'disadvantaged students', it makes a mockery of the intelligence of the students and sets them aside from others. -
I think he may be right, I don't think a full exit is possible- we may do a Greenland reversal thing. We'll be hokey kokey-ing neither in nor out.
The racist shit that going around is scary, we are a mixed race family. We've experienced first hand nasty shit, now Brexiteers have given my local area their blessing to be more openly xenophobic and racist.

I've always thought a bigger area would get more interested. It seems quite a small group that does this. As for not knowing them, google images and Google fu usually finds them.
I found this one in 5 mins without having a fucking clue where or what it was.
I'm at the Sandbar on Saturday. If it's not gone then I'll grab it after a few beers.

I didn't say let's stop, just not go down the pre EU route. And TBH we're not the best engineers anymore and space rockets and formula 1 cars are not exactly big GDP contributers are they?
Edit: I agree engineering overall is productive for the country as an export atm but with the EU single market being our biggest customer by far due to trade agreements. No trade agreements, means we have to compete in an open market, we're not cheap enough.
Plus doesn't progress in those fields require scientific research or R&D, ah that's right we voted out didn't we - which probably means we'll fall further behind.
