Lush indeed.
£250 is basically free when you consider what Raleigh want for this : http://www.raleigh.co.uk/ProductType/ProductRange/Product/Default.aspx?pc=1&pt=14&pg=8447

Persevere. Unless you have back problems you'll probably get used to it quite quickly. When I first got a drop bar road bike I thought 4cm of drop was right, now I'm basically Marco Pantani that now feels stupidly upright. For max aerotuck 8cm isn't really enough.
Try an adjustable stem. It'll look a bit cack but you can play with the height and see if you can get it right for you and if you do get used to head down position you won't have spent too much. Here's one for a starter http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=39262

Usually I am trying to work out whether what I had for breakfast has made me particularly quick today or there's a strong tail wind. Other times I wonder whether I've suddenly got shit at riding a bike or if there's a head wind.
One day I will probably get up early enought to leave early enough to do a 180 endo / skid and ride back the other way for a bit to work it out. Not tomorrow though. Too tired.

Oh and dem Saaf London alps - 42x16? I had to get out of the saddle like a roadie up a hill near (in?) Honor Oak a couple of weeks back when visiting family. Is there much like that?
