I contacted Alan in Italy, and they managed to find me the last of their cable guides. They are slightly different to mine, but I can make them fit. The nice thing, very nice thing indeed, is that they supplied them FOC. So chapeau to Alberto Falconi at Alan bikes for that!
I used google translate to send them a very nice thank you e-mail, in Italian. The very least I could do.

Has anybody done any bikepacking on a long travel hardtail 26er? I'm looking at mine and wondering if it's suitable enough to not need another bike
I did an 11 month "round the world with bike" trip back in 1994. On my 3 month tour of NZ I encountered loads of cyclists (mainly Germans) riding fully laden hardtail MTBs - some *very *heavily laden. They seemed to be managing OK. If they could do it, I don't see any reason why you couldn't. On a bike tour, front suspension is unnecessary, inefficient and just adds weight. Better to hang low-rider racks onto non-suspension forks. Spreads the weight between front and rear and gives the bike more stability as it keeps the centre of gravity lower.

I have a lovely 1980 ALAN alloy frame. I think it's an ALAN Competition model. Two of the three top tube cable guides are broken. They are screw in and I've managed to remove the screws and broken guides. Is it possible to get replacement matching cable guides and if so, from where?
Thanks, and here's the frame.........

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for that. Do please let me know if the tools become available separately. I will definitely have them. (I would have already paid for them yesterday evening but I wanted to watch the day's Tour de France stage highlights!) Hang onto my e-mail address and let me know via e-mail as I don't check the LFGSS site on a daily basis.
Good luck with the tandem set, it looks fab!
regards
Steve
