Taped with good technique from top down is fine. Riding in hoods you might find it less comfortable but it shouldn't fold.
I always do it on track drops given there are no hoods and I like to move my hands close to the stem where finishing tape would otherwise be, shit is uncomfortable and can sweat out adhesive. -

Modern compact bars must only be used with ahead stems.
Compact drops on skinny steel frames.. look really anaemic
Probably has more to do with the size of the frame. I think they look better on skinner steel, smaller size. Flat transition always essential.

From experience, I recently fitted some hwy one's on my track after trying b123, b125 and Criteriums. *Much *prefer the compacts aesthetically and, well, comfort wins also. haha. (no surprise)
