Hey am a student up in birmingham and have just got my first fixie (surly steamroller). I need to swap over my rear sprocket to change the gearing abit, a complication being I will have to lengthen (get a new) chain. Not having the correct tool ie, chain whip and lockring tool to do this I see that I have a few options.

• One buy the tool and do this my self (the current lock ring is WELL on there)
  
• Get it done at Halfords have been quoted £12 labour costs
  
• Get it done at friendly bike shop (no idea if one exists) by people who know what they're doing
  
  

Any advice would be much appreciated but being a student keeping £££ down is a priority. Thanks

A few more photos, have been doing abit of DIY with different handlebars and adding some leather bits to the toe clips, all abit DIY but I reckon they look alright.

Think I prefer ridding the bulls though, think il have to find something cool to do with them to make them look abit better though

Yeh, only 3 skid patches for 48/18 and 42/18 isn't much, guessing I will go for 48/19 or 42/17. Maybe I should have done some reading up before buy the potentially wrong cogs :(. Oh well they were only cheap and will give me a taste of what ratio I want to run.

Sounds good, just want a good gear for ease of skidding and to make pulling away easier. Plus being a student monday morning hangover gear sounds good haha.

Plus another reason for downsizing chain-ring n not up-sizing sprocket was as the wheel is at the front of the dropouts as it is so not sure the current chain would fit onto 48/19

Hmm woops, well wasnt lots of money. Got the 42t first think id run 42/18 but then after a little reading around seemed this might be to low a gear, duno what peoples thoughts are on it. Is only going to be used for 5min ride to and from uni.

Cheers, will look into this. Have been just ridding it about for the mean time n learning how to ride fixie n how to stop (aka skid). Finding that my gear ratio, 48/18 is abit high so have bought a 42t and 16t cog cheap on here to play around to see where im happier. Think I will probably run 42/16 just for ease, and to make skidding easier.

Done a few little aesthetic bits today such as swapping bar ends for some wine corks I had lying around n sorting some lights/reflectors out that dont look to bad. Pics to follow if anyone is interested.
