Hi all -
For sells are a pair of Tektro 57mm deep drop brakes. Perfect for all your winter commuting and mudguard needs. In fetching black.
Lightly used - I'd say they've seen about 100 miles max. Photos below (I hope).
Looking for 20 quid for the pair, pickup in Covent Garden during the week or in Putney evenings / weekends. Would rather sell as a pair.
Might be open for postage but would have to check out costs.

I saw pretty much every type of behaviour exhibited in this thread on a 45 minute ride around SW London today. My fault for not checking there was a massive charity ride, a 7000 competitor duathlon in RP as well as another duathlon in C. London. Carnage, chaotic and farcical are words that come to mind. Huge pelotons of riders, saddles about 6 inches too low, weaving and swerving randomly around the road. Roadies and triathletes giving it the 'I'm a serious cyclist' look while riding like utter tools. Combined with the huge numbers of drivers who decide sunday is a good day to get in the car and drive to a busy town centre. Despair.
I was on that charity ride - heard that people were cycling like idiots but didn't see it myself. The 100 mile route took us through some crazy roads. The traffic was insane today, far worse than rush hour as all the Sunday drivers were sat in the bus lane.

How heavy are the stock wheels? For 400 quid you should be able to buy/build something around 1500g - but probably heavier if you use something like an archetype.
What about rs80's?
Oh and yes- there will be a significant difference if your current wheels are around 2kg.
Great, thanks for the tip. Not sure on exact weight of the wheels, but I took the front one off and popped it on the scales - c1.5kg for wheel/tube/tyre...
The specs are:
Hub - Shimano HB-2200 / FH-2200
Rims - Alex AT450 32H
Spokes - 32 no nameRS 80s look nice...

Quick bit of advice needed....
In spring I purchased a Genesis Equilibrium - It was on the cycle to work scheme so I got the 520 frame and fork. Really enjoy riding it, but it is unsurprisingly weighty (11kg), so for next year I'd like to shed some grams. I was thinking that the best way to do this was to look at wheels, as the stock wheelset is not special by any means (front wheel including tyre and tube comes in at 1.5kg).
I'd be looking at a max budget of £400. Question is, would it be worth it to change the wheels at that price range, i.e. would there be a big enough change in ride feel to wax the dorrah? If so, what is good in that price range, both for OTP wheels and handbuilt ones (love the look of archetypes)?
Thanks for input!

Shit! Just found out from that story that they were riding for a charity that my friend helped set up! Awful news.

What a waste of life. Condolences to friends and family.

Yes - there is definitely play when you put the front brake on and push forwards. There is some surface rust on the bike but it has been kept inside for pretty much it's whole life. I'm thinking I might take it down the LBS for a full check over.
In the short term, I found a Sheldon article about servicing headsets so I might play around next time I'm with the bike.
Thanks for the pointers!

What do you mean by "flexes"? Forks do flex a bit, in a springy kind of way. A rattle or loose feeling is a headset issue.
Sorry should have been more specific... The whole fork pivots backwards slightly - there is no bend where anything shouldn't. Loose would describe the feeling. As you say, my suspicion is that it is a headset issue - if it is 30 years old (and likely never serviced) then I guess it needs some attention.

Thought I'd tap the LFGSS hive mind on something...
I might be able to get my hands on an old Dawes Lightning (late 80s) that I am considering restoring or attempting to turn into a SS. Before I embark on this, I wanted to check something:
If you apply the front brake and push the bike forward, the fork flexes backward, at the point where it enters the headtube. Would this be a problem with the fork itself, or something to do with the crown or headset? Is it safe or easily fixed (bearing in mind I considered it a major mechanical achievement to fit some new brakes that I purchased the other day to my other bike)?
Also, bonus points if you can give me any additional detail about this bike - frame material and such. I know it has had new bars / brakes etc (switched from drops) and a new crankset in its time, but it would be cool to know the original spec. Imagine it is pretty low end but that's fine!
Couple of pics hopefully showing below...
Cheers

Thoughts on RS 80s vs Mavic Ksyrium Equipe...? Both are on deal with Merlin at the moment - Equipes for 300 quid and rs 80s for 324.
Any noticeable differences in stiffness or durability?
