Thanks!
does it ride well? I'd have a hard time going for one after being on VPP for so long.
I know I've been repeating how clueless I am about MTBs, but regardless, I think the bike rides great. So far I've felt like a lot of the time I don't really notice the suspension that much, which I've taken as a positive sign.
I guess the simplicity of the design was a big draw for me, and I decided beforehand that I could accept some compromises in suspension performance. And the geometry is modern (if not ultra-long).

I don't even think that the bike feels cramped or anything, on or off the saddle. I guess my worrying might be more to do with "the trend" than anything concrete. With road bikes I'm more 56 than 58, so that's also kind of in line with L over XL.
For reference, a snap with saddle at pedaling height. Doesn't look wildly disproportionate I don't think?

Snow's good because it's easy to see where other people have been riding, but it also makes me very much aware of how clueless I am at this. Anyway, I'll just proclaim that pushing the bike along can be a decent form of exercise in its own right.
Though seriously, I've been able to ride bits I haven't been able to in the past, so there's something to counter the frustration as well. The bike feels intuitive on trails that are suitable for my, ahem, skill level, so I remain hopeful that going with the large frame (instead of XL) was a good choice. On the other hand I do still wonder about this, but it is what it is 🤷.

Behringer does a cheap one, few others in the same price bracket as well. See e.g.

Note that you'll probably need a mic pre-amp with phantom power for these.

Yeah, that makes sense, and I imagine there's no substitute for trying out different tyres myself. Anyway, no sketchy moments today (fumbling yes, but not uncontrolled kind of sketchy). It was slightly less wet than yesterday, but wet and muddy all the same. Going uphill, I didn't feel I was massively lacking in traction, despite the fast looking pattern on the rear tyre. But I guess it's a bit pointless to try to draw too many conclusions while lacking meaningful reference points.

I managed to squeeze in only a short ride, still enough to get muddy and out of breath. Fall-over count one, the front tyre slipped on a wet root. Not sure if a stickier tyre could have helped. Also tried to do a particular rooty and rocky off-camber section I've struggled with previously, and unsurprisingly the new bike wasn't an instant magic bullet. Overall, I thought that the most immediately obvious improvements over what I've had before were gears and the dropper post—which of course could have been had for much less sans the bouncy bits.
Sizing was one thing I was a bit worried about, as I fall between L and XL. I went for the smaller size after as much research and testing I could manage [not sure if true], and I'm inclined to think the bike fits me well. Planning to keep the handlebars at full 800mm for now at least, and the 165mm cranks were totally a non-issue.
Initial outlook positive, more data required 🤖

Hope to be out riding this weekend
Plans are stupid. Anyway, the bike should be rideable now. Weather forecast says sleet for the night, but will see if I could spend an hour or so of daylight riding tomorrow.
Right, thanks. I couldn't figure out the intended routing / my google-fu was weak. Actually I'm not sure if the hose would have been long enough to begin with, it was a fairly short section I chopped off (this was an OEM set without retail packaging).
I switched over to alternative clamping point on the front of the fork, which I had managed to miss somehow, and I think the hose length is more of less ok that way.
I bounched the bike (well, it's more of a dull thud than a bounce, but anyway) and lifted it up on the back wheel, and couldn't detect any loss of brake power at any point, so I'm still pretty confident that bleeding went ok. Will keep an eye on it, though.

A bit of a dredge, but this tickled me on a personal level. The frame of our 70+ year old house is built from recycled solid timber, which—where exposed—looks not totally unlike some of the better preserved bits of that old cottage.
