aha doppelkorn... the thing is the saddle is a bit perished. It was pretty loose and cracked and generally fragile. When I was sitting on it my bum was touching the rails that are underneath the leather so I tightened it and it ripped. Seeing how fragile and cracked it is I think I really will have to replace it. Oddly enough despite the rails and the rip its still pretty comfortable. It says "wright and co Olympic" on the side but is identical to the brooks B73

Lae I do wonder about the seatstays. I really cant get my head around it. The saddle bag I did have but it literally fell apart in my hands it was so old.

this seems to be from the period my bike is from. Its interesting to see how they painted the frames.... the guy just dunks it in a bath of enamel paint! This is actually quite good because it paints the inside of the tubes as well, wich was quite comforting to me when I was wondering if the frame might be badly rusted inside.

hi guys, glad you like it :) Yeah I am not too sure about the chain myself :P I was imagining it to be less bright.
The cranks I got new ones, the original ones are still good but I wanted a smaller chainring. Lots of hills in my home town. All in all the things that aren't original are the bb some bearings the crankset and the chain, the pedals and a new cog for the sturmey archer.
rik I would say I spent about 4 hours a day for the past week and a half I think. I am a student and have this summer break and nothing was really happening this last month so it was great to have this project

This is just to show a really fun project I have been working on this summer. Basically this year I had the intention of having a good track bike and a good road bike by the end of the year, the track bike done this is the project that led to the road bike
Here is how it all started:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55203562@N02/7999188057/in/photostream/and finally this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55203562@N02/8006290889/in/photostream/Just took it out for a spin through the countryside back roads (I thought appropriate) and its a very very smooth ride, with a 46t chainring and 22t sprocketed sturmey archer hub climbing and starting from still is very easy, its heavy but this seems to be a bit of a non issue to me. This project took 2 weeks and if I told you it did not envolve swearing I would be a filthy liar :) New BB unit, new bearings and grease on all the hub internals and a new coat of paint. It took a while to wire brush all the rust from the wheels but now its all done and all mine and I love it!
I still have bad dreams about the dirty foul UGLY battle with the cotter pin that wouldent move.....

I find these 26 tpi ones turn up on ebay every now and again, here is one now: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Raleigh-Bottom-Bracket-/180965644484?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2a226498c4#ht_500wt_1160
That has a cottered spindle and only 1 cup though so might not be suited to you? Sheldon says "generally a raleigh with cottered cranks will be 26tpi" or something to that effect, I also remember reading that raleigh only did 26tpi until the 90s.
I would recommend looking out for a cottered raleigh bb on ebay, buy it and if you dont have a cottered bb on your current raleigh just buy a new raleigh spindle.

I am living in bournemouth and am from hertford, neither have overly busy and/or furious roads. I dont really feel afraid of anything when cycling on the road. I tend to get scared when I stop cycling, what I am afraid of is that I might be overly un scared, in the same way that I am not scared of wasps or bees as I have never been stung, though I am afraid one day this might lead me to be careless and get stung... so to speak :)

ah ok, I only was on this forum in the last year. Didnt realise that one had been on here
