there is a laser cutter at my university so I made an etched design for the lamp lens and put some black paint in the etched lines. The frame was just cleaned very thoroughly and given the wax. Its been very wet these few weeks but there is not a hint of rust so it must be working. I gave it alloy rims and handle bars as well so as to keep the weight down.

I'm happy to see a humber project on here. I just finished restoring a humber sport, I was very tempted flip the north roads and make it a bit more of a sporty bike, but didn't in the end. It is interesting to see with your build what sort of thing would have happened if I had done this. I will take a picture and post it on here if you like.
Linseed oil sounds awesome. I have never tried it but have heard good things, there are two sorts, one boiled and one not... cant remember what sort is best. Anyway what I can vouch for is this: Simoniz SIM0010A 150g Simoniz Original Carnauba Wax: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike
I put 2 coats on my bikes slightly rusty patina and it repels water nicely.

don't bother with this company. Here is my experience: I ordered a pair of bars from them on the 4th, they get here today on the 23rd and they sent me the wrong bars. Furthermore I called them up after a week and a half of waiting and they told me they had been dispatched and would be with me in a day. When they did not I called at 2 weeks and they said they would send them now and that they haven't been sent yet.... finally I get sent the wrong product that I cant use.

i confess that when i first heard about riding without brakes on a fixed gear I thought it the most retarded horrible pretentious idea possible. Yet while my road bike has had its wheels at the builders (about 2 weeks) i have been exclusively riding my track bike on the road without brakes and loving it.

It is, felt surprisingly nimble and light to ride compared to a normal Dutch bike, and lighter than one to boot.
Very odd design but would love to own one one day with a full mtb group set.
strangely nice isn't it? I was considering posting it in porn but I thought that would have angered some :P
I would also like to own one one day, they are still being made but are pretty expensive. Due to small scale production perhaps? Amazingly there are still some knocking around that are over 100 years old! (yes really)

may I present.. the dursley pendersen. I am not sure if these have been introduced to you guys before, I have only ever seen one in real life once but it looks like a rather interestingly functional design, you sit very upright on a saddle that is rather like a saddle shaped hammock woven out of slightly elastic cords. It looks very comfortable

Oh and these tyres are 20c, I would probably use something bigger to fil the clearances... And yes, I know, it's a bit too small for me, but I know the set-up will be 100% comfy, and I will do whatever I can to make it look OK (will probably use 175mm cranks to insert more seatpost...
The brakes need 60mm drop. With that rear bridge detail, it screams for centre pull, and I have some old Mafac that should do just perfect for this...

Unrelated but it looks like you have a hohner accordion in your first photo, I had the same thing but the melodeon version, do you play?

i think its quite a good satire of this forum in many ways. I mean, we have bar wrap porn, and people have flaming wars over rolling resistance. I like bar wrapping and am interested in rolling resistance but at the same time if I really think about it it seems like a sort of joke, yet we become so passionately animated by such things.
I doubt op REALLY thinks people deserve to die, but the fact that people arent quite sure if its a joke or not is really quite interesting. :)

This thread is for stories of bonkers situations people have got themselves into on behalf of their bicycles, hilarious situations, funny stories - Share em'!
To get started and btw this was the original inspiration for me to start this thread, here is my wild goose chase story:
So I like old english made bikes such as old sunbeams and humbers ect and I saw one on ebay for a great price. Pick up only. Its in somerton just outside yeovil and I am in bournemouth, I thought ok I can set out on saturday morning, get the train to yeovil busk for a few hours with my accordion and make up the money for travel and some of the bike then get the bus to somerton as there is no train station in somerton.
anyway... had a nice afternoon busking in yeovil with my friend who came and it became time to get the bus to somerton, picked up the bike and went back to the bus. This is when it all starts to go wrong, the guy doesent let the bike on the bus even though there were all of 3 people on board. Im originally from a pretty out in the sticks place and had always been alowed a bike on a bus. So I thourght alright I will cycle back to yeovil then get a train, my mate got on the bus as he had nothing with him. I start out and it gets dark, alright thank god for sturmey archer dynuhubs... tire blows out.... hmm, its pitch black so I stop in the nearest town, Illminster. Alright then So I have to stay here the night, costs £50 in the only hotel :(((((( next day cycle to yeovil after getting a new tube. I should point out here that the tires have bulges due to age so riding this thing is like riding on square wheels. Anyway sounthampton which I have to change at has engineering works/has exploded/had a time portal engulf it. The result was me getting back to bournemouth at 5:44 pm.
All in all cost me £100 for the journey and £90 for the bike and wasted a whole weekend instead of about 6 hours as expected. :( Not my finest hour..... but I guess I have a humber :) AHHHH YEAH!
I have never tried to engrave onto metal, I assume its alloy, which is quite soft so I dont think it would be a problem. If you wanted to laser engrave a logo onto it you could probably do it. I believe there are companies that offer a laser service and that is the best way to go about it. Basically the cutter I used is like a giant printer with an automatic head that goes back and forth cutting the pattern.
I would say you should try to find a company in your area that runs such a service and ask them if they will do it. They will need a CAD drawing of whatever logo or text/picture you want
hope it goes well! I would be interested to see the result if you pulled it off
