I'm from Ghent so I know the area :)
The canal from Bruges to Ghent is easy and quick, but really not a nice route. You even have to make a little detour around a concrete factory somewhere halfway.
My advice, if you have some time: check fietsnet.be. It's in Dutch only, but basically you can compile your own route by clicking the red numbered waymarks. You can then print your route on a convenient paper strip which you can tape to your toptube. Basically anything but the canal will be supernice.
It's not the quickest way to get from A to B, but I always cycle like this in Flanders. The numbered waymarks are extremely well indicated, at every junction there is a small green signpost indicating where you should go.
The canal will be quicker, but nowhere near as nice.
Good luck and enjoy, feel free to give me a shout if you need any more advice. -

Another issue I thought would be easier on the Croix de Fer.
I already had to improvise a spacer (from an old tent pole in fact) to fit the front sks mudguard, and now the Tara will not just let itself get mounted, the lower curved tubus clash with the quick release handle.Haven't really taken the time to figure something out, but I sure expected this kind of thing to be easier. I would like to see how you fit yours! Do you have mudguards and QR as well?

Ok, thanks. I am currently finishing my own Croix de Fer. I have the dynamo hub, but still need to install the light and USB connection and connect everything. Running the electrical cable outside the fork with cable ties will work for sure, but is a bit untidy.
I'm a bit weary of drilling holes in my brand new fork as well though...
I'll look into it. -

(first post here, hope I'm doing this right)
Along the escalators in MAS, the museum in the Antwerp harbour, are pictures and quotes from WWI, when Belgians were on the run from the violence of the war and became refugees in the UK.
A case of history repeating, except now we are not the refugees.
Ironically, one of the quotes said: 'we will remember the Brits because they treated us well in our time of need'.
I am afraid that this time, us Europeans will not be remember that way.

Interesting project!
Haven't read the whole thread (yet), but it is slightly amusing that you seem to have the audio/electronics system quite figured out, but that's just the very last step of what'll be a huge undertaking.
You've seen a few episodes of Grand Designs? Perhaps you could even contact them, if this project falls in their scope.
Best of luck! -

Interested in that SP Dynamo PD-8 hub with USB charging possibilities.
I am looking to go the same way, and I've heard good things about the SP (cheaper and at least as good as the Schmidt Son?), but I have no clue how exactly things get mounted on the bike and I'm no electronic wizard. Where does the USB connection go?
Do you consider the access to electrical power important enough to spend the extra $$ and fiddling with cables etc...? Again, no experience on the matter here but I am looking to build a proper tourer, so looking for opinions here!
Feel free to drop me a pm, or discuss here @xkittyx -
Are the Castelli overshoes waterproof? If so, dibs.
