Currently unemployed due to long term illness (nothing catching!) and getting back on my feet and into cycling again after 3yrs away in an attempt to get fit (and more importantly loose beer gut!). Have owned, fettled, set up and built my own bikes and others since I was a kid (hit 30 this year :( ) and thoroughly enjoy getting that perfect setup!
Are there any shops out there looking for a part time junior mechanic (depending on whats required) based in west London (or anywhere I could reasonably cycle to from TW15, i.e. under 20miles), in exchange for an occasional rummage through your parts bins? Have just finished building first SS 26" wheeler and am looking to build a 700cc fixie now. Been thoroughly bitten by the bug! Am very good mechanically and if I don't know how to do something, will work it out. Love bikes and love working on em. Help a brother out?! :P -

Narrower != lower rolling resistance. If you want something a bit more sporty than Big Apples (you don't, but there's no accounting for taste), Marathon Racer Evo is available in 40-559

I'm sure you could run them tubeless with sealant
http://www.schwalbetires.com/mtb_tl-readyLIKE! A set of those 1.5" would go on sweet I reckon, especially if I go the sealant and tubeless option. Gonna need a new chainring... and chain... and some clipless shoes... (who would steal a set of cycling shoes?!) :D
That is crazy, city bike with no back brake, sorry but that makes no sense. You realise the "trend" for removing the rear brake is down to people with fixed rear wheels...? What happens when you need to brake suddenly going round a greasy city corner in the wet? Only thing that is going to be friendly with the road is your elbows...
Ok, as I stated, it was never an issue and it worked for me. Building your own bike for your own needs is exactly that, I liked it, it rode well, who else cares?! But, if it helps, this was kinda my reasoning; was running a 1" total slick on rear and 1.35" with more grip on front, also had Magura hydraulic rim brakes and just found the rear would skid at slightest chance it had, but was nice and quick, so as I never really used the rear brake or front gears, I decided to try without them on a rebuild and it worked fine. I used it almost daily in and around London and then Canterbury for about 6-7yrs before it was stolen and I loved that bike. It was the main reason why I went for another mountain bike frame with this new build, as I liked the versatility and general toughness. But I would like to do a 700cc fixie based build now too. Did build a Peugeot SS ratbike many yrs ago which I had for all of 3 weeks before it was stolen! But never got on with it as it had crap ratios, something like a 52/12 if memory serves right... :P

Any recommendations for fast rolling 26" light weight winter slicks?
Have got Stan's NoTubes Flow rims, so can possibly run tubeless, depending on carcass width.
Its so annoying having been away from cycling for so long and not knowing what works anymore! Especially as I'm the only one in my circle of mates that has any interest in pedal driven conveyance.
Have had to do so much research to build this current bike and can already feel a proper road focused fixed gear SS begging me to build it! Least I think I could built a half decent one for under £500 if I look around and use more 2nd hand parts. Only thing on this bike thats 2nd hand is the frame. -
For road use, use 26x2.0 Schwalbe Big Apples. In b4 Ed.
If the forum seems unresponsive at ~2:00am, it's because that's when the back ups are done. You can go back and edit (delete) your duplicate posts now.
Hmmm, I generally preferred using specialized 1" with armadillo armor (I think thats what it was, it was many moons ago now) for faster rolling resistance, however, did change the front to 1.35 semi slick for better grip after having front end slide out on manhole covers and drainage grates a few times in the wet. Still a damned fast bike.
Currently running 2.2 and 2.35.Sorry MDCC tester, new to these forums and for the life of me, cannot find where to edit my bloody posts! 0_o

why would you remove the rear brake to make it more road friendly...?!
Last city bike I built up ended up with totally minimalist setup and removed rear brake, front gears, and cut down the flat bars I had. Not to everyones taste, but it worked just fine for me and was a very fast bike for a mountain bike framed, 26"er. Just had to be aware to keep your weight back when braking heavily, which was never an issue with me.

Way too tired to take better pics. Just finished today. First SS and not really your typical I suppose, but its mine and I love it (so far)! Built to take a severe beating, be fun and last, as I weigh in at nearly 17 stone and am 6'2" and will ride it hard. On One Inbred frame, DMR OW forks (1016grams), Shimano 2012 XT discs and SLX chainset (single and bash, 36/15 ratio), Thompson 50mm stem, Nukeproof seatpost, Answer Protaper bars and Stan's Flow tubeless ready rims.
But can change to cut down narrow bars, skinny tubeless slicks (if I can find any for a 26" wheel), SPD's, 42 tooth chainring and remove rear brake if I wanna make it more road friendly in future. -

Ok, I've been going through hundreds of pics of some the most beautiful bikes on earth on this thread and up until the last few posts shudder, have had an uncomfortably tense sensation from my nether regions... luckily, the last few pics have put a stop to that.
Bike porn for the win. :D (and yes, I'm new here) :P
Oi oi. Been here a couple of days and already planning next build, a fixie rat bike, if I can find appropriate frame. DAMN YOU GUYS!!!
Lots of beautiful bikes here and a ton load of valuable information. I is based out in the gloomy furthest suburbs of west London, Ashford (the surrey one, not kent. told you it was far). Have just finished latest build (literally yesterday!), a white On One Inbred SS 26" wheeler that some might have seen in current projects thread. Hopefully get a chance to get out and get my arse out to a ride or event (or gasp both!) and meet some peeps soon.
