Sadly I have obtained a Brompton for my full time commuter and no longer have space for my rebuilt Royal Mail cargo bike. I rebuilt this bike in 2014 after buying it on this forum, frame was fully stripped, realigned and refinished. I am 172cm/5'8" or so, the geometry is pretty upright and the bike is a smidge big for me anyway, but would easily go up to someone who was 180cm/6' tall.
This thing is a beast and I moved house on it a few times over the years, able to carry 50kg+. I've carried entire bikes, people etc on it with no issue, the steering remains light due to the parcel tray design as well the fork rake gives it very low trail (~35mm from memory). The bike has some general wear and tear from a few years of commuting, but is entirely serviceable.
Asking £175 pickup in Dulwich/Forest Hill
- Steel frame re-aligned by Oak Cycles and powdercoated in RAL 5014 Pigeon blue in 2014
- Custom front leather parcel tray webbing made by myself
- Sturmey Archer 3 Spd rear hub and 90mm dynamo hub front built into alloy rims with DT Swiss double butted spokes 36h F/R and Schwalbe Marathon Plus (plenty of tread left)
- Drum brakes front and rear, shoes on these last forever and are immune to poor weather
- Rear Pletscher rack
- Wired up ready for dynamo lighting, just add front and rear lights. Custom front light mount I made and 3D printed
- Handlebars, brake levers and stem were replaced with new about a year or two ago, new bar tape.
- Brooks Sprung saddle
- Pump in photos not included!

For sale is my beloved groupset, This groupset is quite unique as it was the first version of the 11sp Athena, so it basically came with Chorus level bits for less money. It is the one year only 2010 Athena groupset which features ultra-shift gear levers, this means you can drop 5 gears with a single stroke of the thumb levers, which is only available on Chorus and up. Also it has Ultra-torque on the cranks which was later phased out except for higher models.
For now only selling as complete for £310
Pickup SE London during evenings or Central London work hours. Can post at cost, FYI groupset weight is 2.4kg plus packaging if you want to figure out costs for yourself.
I bought this originally in 2010 which I posted about here
http://smutpedaller.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/campagnolo-athena-gruppo-zonda-wheels.htmlThis groupset has now been replaced by a SRAM 1x hydro setup and now I have to get rid of this to help pay for it. I've replaced bits that have worn out, see below for details. It includes
- Athena Carbon Crankset 170mm compact 50/34 Ultra torque. I recently added new TA/Stronglight chainrings and new Campagnolo FC-SR200 chainring bolts, these have only about 200km on them. Also I replaced the bearings on these at the same time with genuine Campagnolo units, so they spin super smooth. There are the usual scuffs and marks on them from usage. Includes Ultratorque BB Cups. NB The rings alone cost £100, also the chainring bolts and bearings cost another £50!
- Athena Ultra-shift Gear/brake levers with carbon levers. There is wear on the hoods from usage as they are the originals. The gears probably need a bit of a clean and lube as they occasionally can be sticky. Replacement internals are reasonably priced and easily available. Also I have the adjustment shims for larger hands as well as the cables and compressionless outers.
- Athena Rear Derailleur short cage This is the original one and has some road rash on it, otherwise works fine.
- Athena Rear derailleur long cage. Logo is scratched otherwise good, this is a later model one with the stronger return spring so this shifts better
- Athena Front derailleur braze on. This is a later model one.
- Athena Skeleton brakes, original pads.
- Chorus 11-25 cassette and SRAM 11sp Chain. Still has a fair bit of life in it.
I bought this in late August last year and have built it up in this thread https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/294987/
I've since discovered it has had some rubbing on the NDS chainstay which has gone through the paint into the layers of carbon, this was due to a few rides with some thick abrasive mud. Other than that the frame is in generally good nick never crashed and only ridden for a few months. So rather than paying to have it repaired I decided to sell it and put the proceeds towards a frame with even more tire clearance so I'm regretfully putting it up for sale. FYI the steerer has been cut with enough space for a stem and spacer underneath as shown in the build, there are some scratches around the drive side near the cranks as I had some issues with chain suck.
Asking £190, pickup in Central London or can post at cost. These are currently £500, they tend to fluctuate in price depending on whether planet x is on sale or not. Frame is sold as is, either get it repaired or ride it like it is if you like.

Yeah it is very strange as I've never had chainsuck issues on any of my bikes before... I suspect that the chainring teeth are out of phase, normally you are meant to buy matched pairs so all the typical shift points are matched to avoid this happening... The Stronglight/TA chainrings come in lots of sizes and none are indicated to match with each other
-
With both chainrings replaced it should have been sorted... not so easy. Now I had a new problem... The chainsuck on these new rings is worse than with the worn originals...! I couldn't really find factory replacement so the only real chainrings on the market were Stronglight or Spécialités TA. I suspect this is happening due to a mismatch in phasing of the teeth when shifting or possibly caused by spacing the big ring out further...
It happens whenever shifting down from the big to small ring, even with a tiny bit of load it jams up. The original rings never did this until they had a lot of mileage on them, and even then only when the chain was filthy... disappointed!

In the course of this build up I had to do some replacement of worn out bits, the Campag drivetrain I had was originally bought in 2010 and had quite a lot of mileage on it at this point. After replacing the bearings previously, I had to replace the chainrings too. However this was a lot easier said than done, as the availability and fit of replacement rings was not so clear...
Firstly Campagnolo changed the chainring bolt design on later cranks, going from two piece bolts as per standard, to bolt that threads directly into the small ring. New vs Old:
Secondly because of Campagnolo's hidden bolt design, and proprietary BCD pattern (the hidden bolt is offset at 112mm while the others are all 110mm on a compact crank) you are limited in choice. This is the bit that screwed me up as unbeknownst to me, the 2010 Athena Carbon CT cranks are a bit oddball and actually have a different chainring fit to the Chorus/Record cranks of the same year despite having a very similar appearance.
Due to cost and availability I ended up buying the Stronglight CT2 chainrings which are meant specifically for Campagnolo cranks... they even have a milled out section where the hidden bolt goes... fantastic I thought....
However the milled out bit was too thick and caused the crank to not sit flat on the spider... Also in small-small combination the shift pins would pick up the chain, indicating that the chainring was not sitting too far inboard...
So I had to mill it out that pad a bit and add thin 0.6mm spacers to get the big ring out to prevent that...Looking good...

Update...
I bought a cheap 2.0" 650b WTB Wolverine and test fitted them on the back and front. Back barely fits, bugger all clearance (1-2mm) so if your tyre is not perfectly straight and the wheel is not perfectly true expect wheel rub... so basically a no go. Actual inflated width of these tyres is 47mm at the widest point so narrower than 2.0" (50.8mm)Loads of space at the front however as expected...
-
Originally I wanted to try 650b on it, I've ordered a 2.0" tyre to give it a go to see if it will fit. I've measured it at the rear chainstays and it looks tight, but if I can fit it in then it's really not too far from a rigid MTB :)
Yes otherwise very happy with the bike, the £1000 Apex build is an absolute steal! I actually like bright orange like on the Open U.P however I found the yellow text horrible
-
Hey, yes it's going great! I've taken it on a few rides now all off road, the frame is great to ride. I took it along the South Downs way which is the perfect kind of terrain for this bike, not too technical but mostly tame gravel. I'll be posting a bit more shortly...
There's a few mechanical issues that are related with the chainrings that I will post about, however life got in the way :P
