Interesting / nerd-tastic blog on front fork trail which apparently is an area of debate for (particularly) American raddoneur / custom frame builders (as in they think bikes should run with far less trail than they typically currently do on 'modern' bikes). Must say I'm surprised that there's a suggestion that low trail is better for front loaded touring by Dario Pegoretti, I'd have thought that you would want stability more than anything on a loaded bike. Maybe I've misunderstood.

So many twats in regents park yesterday evening. I'm going to stop riding my nice bike there... If you turn up on a nice bike all the dickheads assume you want to race. I just wanted to spin.
You seen the tosser in the full dunwich dynamo kit (think that's it, the light blue one) riding a blue pinarello dogma? This is what it's like riding in the park with that turnip (if you're on here, learn how to ride you moron):
- you pass him
- he decides that's a signal to race
- he sprints alongside you, typically leaving you boxed in with obstacles in your path ahead but not his
- he slows down
- you slow down to avoid empowering him with a mini peloton
- he moves on
- repeat x1 per lap
Sorry for all the anger today folks.
- you pass him

ed, have you ridden the surly unladen? how did it compare? obviously i'm not buying it to ride unladen but there will be times when that's the case.
i don't really want a kaffenback - initially i thought i was after a cross tourer but ultimately for my own piece of mind i want to know that i could load the thing up to the hilt and it still ride well enough that i didn't notice it flexing all over the place. that means there will be times when whatever i choose is underladen, but equally times when it's at full capacity.
some interesting points in the previous posts, thanks for the thoughts, all.

I'm veering between a LHT and a Soma Saga. Veering towards the Saga, built up on Tiagra / Deore mix with bar end shifters etc.
Any thoughts on the frame? They are both butted, the LHT is double butted but the Saga is Tange Prestige rather than Surly's own 4130.
They'll both be great bikes, I guess I'm just interested in any experience people have of the difference between the two, if anyone does.

What a dog. There's a thread on here somewhere about a bike someone's built with single sided chainstay and single fork - looks like he was beaten to it by this award winning hunk of turd.

Fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
it's not a big and clever thread (honest), and i'm sure it will be pulled down soon enough, but sometimes you just need a space to let rip cos something's gone TOTALLY wrong, and you can't shout out loud cos you're in the office / caff / wherever / etc.

i'd worry about damaging the bottom of that front mudguard. it looks like it would potentially clip some steep speedbumps / ramps. presumably there's a very good reason why they are shorter at the front than the back on the vast majority of bikes.
