Is it worth it? I boil a lot of water, buy a lot of sparkling water, and use a Brita filter for pretty much everything we boil or drink because the water round here doesn't taste great, so I think I'm their target customer.

We're not in London any more - are places like these good enough value to warrant a trip down, or are they a sign that as a general rule if you find a local specialist supplier you'll get a better deal?

Where does one get quartz worktops? Am I right in thinking that if we went to a specialist, we might save money on prices from Magnet etc? I've seen praise for Imperial Granite and Marble, do they also do cutting, drainage grooves, etc if you give them measurements?

Without too much extra bother you can throw in St James's Park as well - pelicans, household cavalry band if you're lucky, Buckingham Palace - I used to work close by and running there at lunchtime or after work was a genuine pleasure.

Apparently that's only if they're digging down further than the foundations of the neighbouring property or it requires underpinning - would have to be a whopping great garden office for that to be relevant.

Yes we did - and in the chat today we discovered that she's going to be really reasonable about it and doesn't want to put us to extra expense. It helps that the architect lives on the same street as well, and that she built an extension about 20 years ago that the woman we bought the house off was very unreasonable about - she doesn't want to be like here.

Our neighbour seemed a bit concerned about our pending extension and the need for party wall surveyors etc.

I wasn't sure why until she came round for a chat and brought a sheaf of letters she'd been receiving from companies as soon as our planning permission came through.

I didn't realise there was such an ambulance-chasing industry around scaring people whose neighbours are getting work done into thinking it's going to be a nightmare.

I turned my phone off yesterday so I could enjoy an outing to the zoo without being stuck looking for the score.
