You could try to head down Portland st which runs parallel to Walworth > through Burgess > Southhampton way > Benhill and then up Camberwell Grove. It's quite a detour and the grove is a much steeper hill, but definitely quieter. And you can then head through lordship lane or the village from then on.
Edit: stevo's suggestion is probably less "quiet way"

Directly outside the pret where the stands are? I lock my bike there all the time to go to the gym. Always thought it was fairly safe, but its brave to be locking that bike anywhere!
Did they cut through it?
I'm surprised no one saw considering its a main road and theres pret there. Is there any CCTV? I'll keep an eye out, but I'd be surprised if it hangs around the same area.

Fair enough. I think I've done it once to like 3 people waiting. Obviously when there's a big line of people it's insanely rude. But generally when you're fixed acceleration is much greater and carrying speed to the bottom of that road isn't hard. Or top depending on how you go. Maybe I'm just a dick.
Really doesn't surprise me. From also going to a pool club near there regularly, I can tell you crossing there is a bit of a fucking nightmare. It's very hard to tell what the cyclist signal is and then once you cross its hard to tell where traffic is coming from. I do feel like they ruined that junction. Obviously you can just wait for the green man to cross, but most pedestrians aren't that patient as the green man occurs for 20 seconds every 2 minutes. This is at southwark station. It's particularly bad for people crossing in front of the TfL building.
