Back from 240km across Ireland along the Grand Canal and a good chunk of road. Maybe 100k of it (maybe less) and tbh, we found it tough going. Over 100k on the first day and camped in a forest during a rain storm. We got up the next morning and only managed less than 40km before the lack of sleep and pain was too much, so we did a tour of local distillery, ate, drank and slept a lot ... in a hotel. Another 100k or so the next day was a lot easier and we made it to the train station to get back to Dublin in decent time.
Lessons learned for this one.
Don't leave your bags out in the rain overnight.
Set your tarp up early, even if you need to leave it to go get food.
Bring insect spray.
Find a smaller sleeping bag.I really like my Apidura bags, but I had to lift the brakes to goober level to get the handlebar one neatly away from the cables, which kinda sucked.
Otherwise a successful trip.

First weekend of September. Germany will take a little planning. I have a feeling I may be doing that one alone. Which won't be bad. I'm looking into one nighters as well over here, but fat bike or road bike not sure yet. Whole new world opened up once I quit the racing.
Yeah, I'm a fussy fucker too, so might need to cop on a bit. Rural Ireland still has a little catching up to do on the food front. Happy Pear are everywhere it seems.

Is this the right thread to ask what people bring to eat? Especially vegetarians? I'm doing three days along canal in Ireland (should only take two but there's a distillery along the route) but want it to be a precursor to the Trans Germany route next year.http://www.bikepacking.com/routes/bikepacking-trans-germany/

This article brings up something I've pondered for awhile. I we're all encouraged to get jobs that allow for upward mobility, who does the work that offers none. Will the Czech workers in this article go home to something with upward mobility or do some of us just have the face the fat that dead end jobs are a reality for us?

Do you really think that an attempt to reunite Ireland won't burst out into another civil war.
Unionists are still insanely against joining ROI where catolic run education is still a major issue, where protestants would be in a massive minority still, where the Church has been coverig up sexual abuse, trying to influence politics and society for years and still is?
Do you think the population of the Republic would welcome a group which they fundamentally believe are facists, that the Unionists and another group they think supported terrorists for the last 40+ years?
My experience, the divide between the two areas is insane. People in Tipperary know nothing about NI bar the fact that they can cheap booze in Newry

Apparently, I may have been way off: https://twitter.com/irishpeloton/status/726011699443171328?ref_src=twsrc^tfw
There are benefits according to this paper

My understanding is that the list of banned substances is being revised as many are on due to historical suspicion of use and their relation to asthma.
Am not falling on either side, just adding some info from someone whose knowledge and experience I respect and has proven to be quite clear in his opposition to doping
