Verenti Substance fit the bill, he'll also get a bit of money left over to buy compressionless housing that nearly all disc bikes don't come as standard (make a massive difference to braking performance).
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/verenti-substance-sora-2014-free-lifeline-basic-kit/
I think Boardman offer a product around the £750 mark, they always get good reviews and offer value for money.
Cannondale's CAADX with Sora is £800 and is a very good frame with okay group set and finishing kit.
The Fuji Feather CX on Evans looks good for £850. Nice & understated too.
Cheers gents. Much appreciated.
As a self-confessed miserly Scotsman I'm sure he'll be tempted by the cost of the Verenti but given his utter clueless with anything mechanical that doesn't have a motor it's good to give him some options.

Horses which lead to many 'oh shit' moments on the descents as I remember, especially at night on a heavy touring bike.
Just spent two days riding easy gravel paths along the Clutha River in New Zealand. There-and-back route of 160km (100 miles) and camped at the turnaround point. The start is only an hour's drive from my house so I'm quite spoiled.
Dunedin?

^You must be bloody mad, I hope the weather cheers up by the time we get there!
Today though, cracking spin with Al and RoboAlmac down to Chiddingstone for a couple of top notch bacon and egg sarnies, polished of with some lovely bara brith and other assorted baked goods.
When the sun managed to peek through it almost felt warm.
http://www.strava.com/activities/122894542/overview
And home to spicy hotpot and pancakes. Result.
Cracking day out with Esstee and Vunugu..
The threat of showers didn't even dampen our spirits.Three things happen after split with Vunugu nr Peckham..
Bus driver nearly kills me then shouts at me at Farringdon/Clerkenwell, I wasn't in the mood for an arguement after 115km
I was in a zen-like state with my casco Robocop helmet on..
Half mile from home Garmin gets excited and sends message 'back on course'
Outside my house garmin gets really excited and says 'congratulations you won'...
Eh what like the lottery.. Surely not a race against myself..A fine ride indeed gents. Those bacon and egg rolls were just the ticket for what my garmin tells me was 1360 m of climbing.

Great ride. No rain. Not much wind apart from the hurricane at the top of Ditchling. Loads of crap on the roads but some great new lanes to add to the route library. Especially enjoyed Slugwash.
Probably the most diverse forum ride I've been on in terms of age, ability and levels of preparedness. Top nav skills from Dan. Great patience and effort by Tim sweeping up. Reckon you're owed a beer or two.
Plenty of good chats along the way, certainly stopped often enough for a yarn or two. Great post ride refreshments as well. Nice to meet a few new faces as well as old ones. Also enjoyed the little competitive effort out of Ditchling village and up the hill. I put that down to the excellent pasty at Turners Hill which finally cured my hangover.

I drove down PCH from SF towards LA a couple of years ago. And yeah it was in a Mustang convertible but what the hell. Was early May and road was not that busy at all. Great journey, would have loved to have ridden down.
+1 on the seals
Just one note of warning, we passed a bunch of road works on the way down and at one point the road was closed and we had to make a detour up into the hills and back down. It was actually one of the highlights of the trip as the scenery was amazing. It would have been a big climb on a bike, but if you have the time and the legs then no bother. Check out the Caltrans website before you set off.
Well jelly...

And you too, Vunugu.. :)
This is the route I've been planning with a couple of mates - it's the Ditchling Devil route - is there a "proper" way to go up Ditchling Beacon?
http://connect.garmin.com/course/5335451
We're setting off from 8am from Tooting Bec - should hit Velo Cafe in Brighton for a bit before jumping on the train back to london...
Reckon you'll be gone before we arrive if past efforts are anything to go by. If you hang around and fancy a beer, sounds like we're headed to The Evening Star.
As to a "proper" way to go up Ditchling, any way you can I'd say.
-
Shutuplegs on the back streets through Tooting Bec. Nice to roll with you for a bit.
This is the ride I was talking about https://www.lfgss.com/thread119704.html, check it out.
