This sounds a lot like my weird rhythmic click/clunk:
- only happens when pedalling
- random and intermittent
- regreased seat post, no effect, plus it happens while in or out of saddle
- brand new freewheel installed last month
- chain is straight and not over extended
- happens regardless of which side I pedal with, so not the cranks pedals or cleats
I'm now thinking bb is all that's left to check, but I don't have a crank puller.
Haha, why don't we meet up, I'll sort your BB if you sort my freewheel!!
- only happens when pedalling

Thanks for the responses so far, unfortunately don't have a first born so that management option is out of the window ;)
It is a steel frame, had a good look with a halogen lamp but failed to find any cracks or damage around there, also checked all the other joints in the frame... Any other ideas before I replace the freewheel?
Also just for serving my curiosity does anyone know what makes/can make this sound? Always keen to learn as much as poss about my bike.

Hi all, hoping to tap into the infinite wisdom of this forum!
Summary to avoid tl;dr: random occasional clunking noise when pedalling, never when coasting. Possibly freewheel? It has some play if that is a clue.
Can you help me answer:
- Is this a common or bad problem?
- Do I need to replace something or will adjustments sort this?
- How can I avoid it next time, or will it just happen?
More details for the keen: Starting to have this problem more and more, which doesn't seem to affect the running of the bike except that it's a bit off-putting and I'm afraid it's a precursor to all sorts of things going wrong so here goes:
When I pedal, there's a metallic clunk noise almost at random. This is not associated with:
- any particular point in the pedal stroke.
- any number of revs of chain or wheel.
- any particular level of pedal-pressure or cadence (so happens when cranking hard or just spinning light).
- any chain skipping or slipping.
- any particular sprocket in use.
- any particular weather conditions.
Sometimes it can happen many times in a row, other times it may happen once in a two hour ride. My freewheel is a stock Shimano 6 speed, mf-tz06 I believe. There is some play in it when twiddled by hand but not a lot, and doesn't clunk when you jiggle it manually (yes yes technical terms ;) ) Bottom bracket is smooth with no play, chain is well looked after, as are the mechs. Big mystery to me - hope you can help!

Woah this has been so long I forgot I even had a dibs on!! Really sorry but I'm leaving the country very soon for several months and it would be unfair of me to hold up your sale... Also turns out the white rattle can (which I was eyeing up) is too big for me :(
Best of luck selling! SupaspecialK/tm1210, they're all yours to dibs!

So you want the moon on a stick, but you won't go south of the river to collect it?
The moon on a stick would be nice, but a track pump will suffice ;)
Basically I would be prepared to collect it, but because I live many miles up in the north of London and have quite a few jobs to do before next year commences I might have to aggrieve Arup with waking up early on a Sunday, or other such timings that I would hate to force upon someone!
And thanks for all the ideas people!

Arup, you don't happen to swing through central london at any point? I would love to take up your offer but I'm not sure when I would be able to go that out of my way to collect it, and don't want to hold up your ebay sale.
6pt, it's the O-ring, but I sadly can't (try as I might) find a suitably sized replacement because it's an old pump and uses a thickness that standard plumbing doesn't.

Big Ortlieb black rucksack? Could be my mate boycey/ex-messenger Sleeps...he built himself a bambike.
Yup, sounds like the guy! Nice chap - had a chat about the bamboo on the way up the hill from Camden going north. Really beautiful looking frame that. Felt a bit embarrassed pootling by with my hilariously battered bike :)
