I've talked to a guy in the states who used to repair them for 20 years or so and he was quite confident I could do it myself. Basically I don't even need to disassemble the frame, just remove the damaged tube, prep the lugs and the new top tube tube, spread the headtube open just enough to fit the new top tube in and clamp it.
That would be much of a help!

The screw is a M10, 1.5 pitch, 12mm long cup-point set screw in stainless steel. -
I wouldn't paint the vitus if I were you, looks handsome as-is.
Also, I'm getting some grub screws shipped from the states and will have a spare or two, so give me a PM if you need one.
What epoxy have you used?
I'm in need of some high-grade epoxy to fix my Vitus (it's in the current projects, too), but they seem to get hard to get for individual customers.
Good luck with the projects -

Well, a bit of an update.
Got a thomson seatpost (not much decent 25mm seatposts to choose from) and getting the seatpost grub screw shipped tomorrow. As for the top tube, Steve (the guy from LA) is looking through his stock, so I'm waiting for a response.
I really haven't thought that a fork with decent clearances will be harder to find than the top tube, but apparantly it is.
I've found a few, but by the axle to crown measurements I've received I could easily chuck an 700c wheel in them.
I guess I could live with the clearances of the original forks
but with what I've found it'd look like this
Is custom the way to go? -

http://www.lfgss.com/thread96971.html might consider this? though have been actually thinking about keeping it after seeing this http://www.ebay.com/itm/60s-SUPER-MONDIA-randonneur-Swiss-Campagnolo-Simplex-Duprat-vintage-road-bike-gc-/360513212550?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53f0431086

So, to fund my Vitus lopro repair I'm going to have to sell my Mondia frameset.
Some details:- Made in '73 by Mondia in Switzerland (more info - [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondia[/ame]), remarkable craftmanship
- Reynolds metric 531 tubing
- Wagner chrome plated fork crown
- Nervex lugs
- Comes with french threaded sugino BB and Headset, both in good condition
Measurements are: ST- 56.5 center to top; TT- 56.5 center to center, seatpost is 26mm.
The paint is scratched and chipped, the worsts areas are pictured,
besides it has a broken top tube cable guide. The frame however is free of dents/dings and is straight and true.
For more/higher resolution pictures head to my flickr
A similar F/F with a more gaudy finish was just sold on ebay for 130pounds, so
Considering the condition and the bits that come with it, I'm asking 100 pounds Now 55 pounds for the lot, I'm not in the UK, so shipping will be necessary- around the 25 pound mark shipped to UK/Most of Europe, will get a precise quote individually.
Donation to the forum will be made, dibs followed by PM.
Cheers - Made in '73 by Mondia in Switzerland (more info - [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondia[/ame]), remarkable craftmanship

Hey,
I'm looking for a 650c fork for my Vitus Lo-pro, Preferably alloy, but steel or carbon would do. Steerer lenght is unimportant.
Thanks -
tubes tubes tubes !!!
http://www.lfgss.com/thread96737.html#post3244004Already got excited. Sorry, not what I'm looking for.
As for JB weld, I've been reading several threads about vitus repairs and JBweld was told to be avoided, when more suited epoxys are available.

To be honest its not an expensive frame and I wouldn't go through that much just to get it up and running. I see a few road frames a month on ebay in different colors and someone was trying to shift a low pro track version on here a couple of months back with little luck. I stripped the old decal off the top tube and put these current ones I found on ebay on.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/436432/vitus3.jpgWell, it was custom built for my national track team, so I assume it should be worth more than a run-off-the-mill road Vitus on ebay. Besides, I wanted a lopro for a long time and considering what I paid for the frame I figure the cost of getting it running again will be a fraction of what one would normally cost.
Your decals are by far the nicest I've seen, just looked on ebay, which ones are they'?
Cool, was thinking about taking the same frame from her and do the same plan: find a top tube, fork and make it into riding machine again.
Did not think the top tube was cut out for such stupid purpose (and the fact that they just threw away all 650c forks when I also need one is just annoying).
Glad you bought this - I think this should come out well.
Wonder what they do for tube replacing - do they heat the old glue to melt/loosen it? Sound simple enough to DIYThanks, as for the replacement, the old resin loosens up once heated, but as previously stated the hard part is to make a strong bond reassembling the frame.
P.S. Was pointed at a source for the grub screws, 12 dollars for a pack of ten, Was prepared for shelling 50 dorrahs for one, so this was good news.

That's probably looks gorgeous, Erik, got pictures of the whole bike? The more I think about it, the less faith I have in restoring it myself, might ship it to US if they would do it for a reasonable cost.
I have no clue about the thermoplast formerly used, going to ask that shop about the original bonding procedure.
Picked it up an hour ago, looks beautiful, hardly any use, but the original grub screw is missing, looking for one now I found a five day old ebay listing, where four NOS ones were sold for a dollar each, all sold out and haven't found any others for sale yet, bummer.
Probably will, repped. By the way, do chemicals used to strip anodizing affect cured epoxy in any way?
