Thanks for all your replies. My mechanic friends are going to install a Force fd today, as they're horrified by the idea of mixing SRAM and Shimano. I'll lett
You know how I get on. If it don't work straight away I'm going for Dura Ace. Then hopefully I can stop messing' with the bike and get on with riding it![Update: The workshop owner is on the Dura Acve side of the argument, so DA it is!
Will update with news of how it works once the change is made] -

I certainly do use a 7900 with a compact setup 36 / 50 .. and with no problems & it's lighter then the Red titanium mech ;) Take a look at this article if you don't believe it works .. it's mainly discussing new Red but they test various combinations including "Old shifters + Shimano Dura-Ace front derailleur + new crankset: 9/10"

Great article. Dura Ace. My mechanic friend would probably have a seizure mixing SRAM Red & Dura Ace, but if it works, why not.

Ditto re research on issue re SRAM Red FD issues .. haven't used but inadvertently stumbled across this recently with many threads reporting pro teams using Force FD with Red groupset
This is very useful http://www.drivetraincalculator.com/drivetrain.php?
Awesome! Hours of fun. Much appreciated. As have been all the answers.

I have a Force front mech on a 50/34 and it works fine.
The older Red front mechs had a titanium cage which was allegedly too flexible leading to poor shifting, although the newer ones changed to a steel cage to rectify that.I think Force would do for me. I'm intrigued by Ultegra though as I've used it before and the FD alway worked very well.
I had an accident when dropping the chain once (I was out of the saddle at the time) so am a bit paranoid about front ring shifting. -
Just about all you need for conversion to 3 speed hub gearing:
Sturmey Archer SRF3 Speed hubbed wheelset
Sturmey 'new style' thumb shifter with cable
46 tooth Sturmey chainring
Chain
Quality handbuilt wheels using Mavic Open Pro rims with adaptors to suit your OLN spacing
Excellent condition, quite like new**£200 **collected from near Clapham Common or can meet at Clapham South tube or ClaphamJunction station. > PRICE DROP £190

SRAM RED
Just wondered if I'm alone in having trouble shifting from the small ring to the big ring (compact) with SRAM red? There seems to be a knack to it....if I ease off the pressure and move the shifter just the right amount I get a smooth changeover, but if I don't get it dead right the chain slips around or even falls off. I've been on a couple of training rides and so far haven't been able to crack it. I've heard this can be an issue with SRAM Red and have been advised that it might be better to change the front mech to SRAM Force or the new SRAM Red Black which apparently works better. And someone even suggested using an Ultegra front derailleur which he says works fine with a SRAM shifter. I'm not worried about a mismatch so long as it works.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance! -
Thanks so much for the replies. Open Pros it is then.
I meant 10 speed Tiagra. They do a 12-30 which should be ok on the back.
Was going to go for gatorskin hardshells for puncture resistance (and lighter than marathon+). Will investigate the Velocity.
Funnily enough have just bought a Charge Spoon, partly for weight (over the Brooks) and partly because of the rain proofing. Have also bought a light seatpost.
Thanks again! -
I'm rebuilding my Surly Crosscheck (Sturmey Archer 3 speed) to have an 11 speed cassette on the back. I'm having to use two panniers to lug some equipment around London during the Olympics and need more gears to cope with the hills etc.
My LBS has advised buying Open Pro rims on Tiagra hubs which sound fine but what I wanted to ask is, would lighter wheels not be strong enough for the job? I don't want the bike to be like a tank as I'll have enough on my plate with the weight of the gear (plus me) so wanted to save weight where I can. Can anyone recommend wheels that might be lighter but strong enough for the job? Or should I stick with the ever reliable Open Pros? -

Light use. Managed to complete one 56 mile sportive and some training rides around Surrey and Richmond Park over the last 12 months since purchased. No idea what mileage but my Blackburn which is shared between three bikes says 1900 miles so I imagine the groupset would have done between a third and half of them. I also managed to tumble over on my first ride with cleats (when I wasn't moving) so the rear derailleur has a scuff as you can see in one of the pix. Overall excellent condition and everything works perfectly.

Longer test complete. Firstly, should have mentioned before that I have a couple of shortened (middle two) fingers on my left hand as a result of an injury at work, so shifting with the left hand isn't as easy as it should be. Anyway, a twenty five miler with plenty of shifting showed a big improvement from the sram red front derailleur days. I unshipped the chain once with an over-enthusiastic sweep, but by and large the shifting was pretty good using the Dura-Ace shifter. Will stick with it and see how it settles in.
