Finished my Rossin build today (well Nick at the London Cycle Workshop did to be accurate).
The problem is I now have 4 bikes and I told Mrs ElPrez that this one was for selling. Seeing how it's turned out and having ridden it home I'm not so sure...
Will update http://rossinproject.blogspot.com/ with more photos shortly.

A couple of others have said friction shifters are ok. They'd certainly increase the available options. Cost is a factor, as I bought a Veloce groupset here quite cheaply, whereas a Campag Record/Super Record groupset from the early 80's is an arm and a leg. Friction shifters would be more authentic though. Decisions, decisions!

I rented a bike with indexed downtube shifters in France a couple of weeks back. I'd never used them before but found them pretty effective and now I'm thinking something similar might be suitable for a Rossin build I'm working on. I've actually got a Veloce groupset I was going to use, but seeing as the frame has downtube shifter mounts maybe they'd make sense. Trouble is, I've heard that Campag downtube indexed shifters weren't any good. Does anyone have experience of them? They've gotta be Campag for this build.

Thanx v much in advance. -
Word!
I'm going to get my frame powder coated. Theres a little car body/spray shop round the back of my house in Clapton and I was wondering what an average price would be to get this done somewhere? I don't want these fellas muggin' me off.
Looking back at old threads people are chatting around £45...but this could have changed now.
Thanks,
WIGSArmourtex up the road from you is extremely good. Sandblast and powdercoat for around £60-£70 depending on choice of paint etc. They know bikes.

I was planning to get a Selle Italia Turbo saddle for my Rossin rebuild. I like the look of the brown/tan suede version. But isn't suede horribly impractical? I can imagine it getting slimy when wet or discolouring after a shower. Anyone owned one? Any insights much appreciated.
PS Or should I just go for black?! -

I'm looking for a Suntour Superbe Seatpost (27.2mm) for a Rossin project: http://rossinproject.blogspot.com/ or something similar.
It needs to be alloy, preferrably vintage-ish. -

Removed the Surly decals last night using an Oyster card and a hairdryer. Surprisingly I removed the last set from the front forks without using a hairdryer, and they came off much more easily. Could have saved myself about half an hour had I known that last night.

Just finished my project, my grandad gave me his old Raleigh road bike and said I could do whatever I wanted to it. It looks great, I bought new front and back wheels, took my time on a rattle can paint job(turned out really good) and polished up any crome. Also removed any braze on's from when it was in geared state.
Can seem to get a picture to upload, any tips?
Upload it to Photobucket and then it's easy.

that blue surlies quite nice. I think its the burly (sorry) looking rack that helps balance it out. My mate has a 30's raliegh gents racer which has since been updated with a standard 3spd hub and he says the same thing, 1 for climbing (though some climbs around here/ sustained 1:4s etc get a bit much). 2 for general pottering and 3 for downhill and 'getting some miles done' Suits its relaxed style down to the ground.
Ta. I'm thinking of removing the decals. Nothing wrong with Surly, but they're a bit 'down with the kids' for my liking. Or is that mean on Surly?

Nice build there. A fastish commuter with carry space! Are you thinking of using it pretty much as is for touring then? Also your blog suggests you live near me. I'll keep an eye out for you.
Thanks! I sold a single speed and a hybrid and built this as a commuter that'll also get me to the shops and back with stuff. The 3 speed Sturmey seems dead on in terms of gear inches. Very happy with it. Have a couple of road bikes as well, and this is a very different ride, and none the worse for it. I'd LOVE to do a tour someday. Maybe coast to coast or something, nothing TOO hilly though...

Do you think the front mudguard could do with being a bit closer to the tyre?
Yes that's been fixed. LCW made a longer bracket., job done.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V9VdZtT7ZN0/Tg5HnlfmhcI/AAAAAAAAB2E/8PTLxyJo19I/s1600/Photo0358.jpg

At last....my mates at the London Cycle Workshop reckon they´ll have time to build my Surley Crosscheck/Sturmey 3 speed commuter/shopper/park bike next week. Have all the bits ready....http://everygramcounts.blogspot.com/ This bike is supposed to replace my Plug commuter and my trek 7100FX shopper/park bike. I´ve even bought a Brooks saddle (half a kilo!). And I used to be a weight weiner!
