Cav looked furious crossing the line.
looked like he was gearing up for a proper toy throwing.
"I'm the world champion and you dont even protect mee!"
Now, Sky's helmets are laughable.
I bought a kask just a few weeks back. sort of wondering if it was the best idea - having seen them exploding all week. makes me nervous as hell.

Sorry for the noob question, but why did the six man break stay 2 mins ahead all day long knowing they would be reeled in at the finish, when they could have taken it easier in the peloton?
As above plus chances to win Jerseys for tomorrow due to it being the first day.
The fact that they couldn't extend past 3'30" is also a factor of how willing the peleton is to let them go. This stage is a bit of an exception, but it becomes cat and mouse. If they get too far away, one of the director sportives will decide to shut them down. So once they got out to 3+ they took their foot off the gas.
But you'll see a lot more of that in the next few days as relatively unknown riders are given the nod to go on a breakaway and get some TV time.

So was the fabled 20mph average achieved?
Thread lurkers need to know, but also for a maths ride this thread is currently somewhat statless...
I havent looked at splitting out the actual time garmin log, which included the return trip, but the slow part of the fast group were << 3 hours (BRT tells me it's more like 55 miles than 60 though), including a few minor detours here and there.. I was running my garmin on a TCX paced at 30kph, and we trounced the little triangle man somewhere around finsbury and kept him there the whole way - so I'd guess we were close to 20mph, but not quite there. probably about 19.
Think 6pt and Friday finished circa ten minutes in front of us - so based on a 55 mile route and our speed = 19mph would have broken the 20 target, but perhaps only just.

Legend at work just lent me his exposure light, which looks suitably OTT.
Will aim for Kings Cross at 7(??) and hopefully someone can help me out with some sort of ticket advice on the spot.
anyone else need to buy tickets?

This is a terrible recreational route through Surrey. Lots of a-roads, lots of uninteresting sections... Staple Lane and Box Hill are the only really enjoyable parts.
some of the roads are in a shocking state too. I hit a services pit with a missing cover somewhere on guildford road, while a car was trying to pass me. I've never been so glad to have good handbuilt wheels.
lots of potholes from rain in the last weeks, lots of gravel. The bottom of Combe Lane is like a gravel quarry.
