I have a single speed that has a new BB, chain, freewheel and rear wheel but I'm still getting a chugging noise when peddling. Two LBS have been unable to solve the problem.
The noise is particularly bad when climbing an incline
I have recorded it but the file is too large to upload here.
Any ideas? -

Cheers Edscoble,
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about my LBS.
I've taken it there because I know they do good work at a fair price.
I'm just peeed off at having to spend £190 on a bike that's only eight months old.
The bike has been serviced twice in that time, and eighty miles a week isn't excessive.
I'm just concerned that I'll have to pay the same amount in another eight months.
Thanks for the link. I'm logging off of here to have a good read of Made Good.
Thanks again.
And thanks everybody else

I have a straight forward commute. With additional rides, I'm probably doing between 70 and 80 miles a week.
After using different mountain bikes for years, eight months ago, I was told it would cost £150 to repair my bike, so I decided to buy a single speed/fixed gear. The idea being that there's less to go wrong. Low maintenance - less expense.
I bought an SE Lager for £435. It's a lovely bike, and a very smooth ride.
However, after six months, the Thick Slick tyres lost all puncture resistance. I was getting a puncture a week!
I replaced the tyres with Marathon Plus for £60.
I've just taken the bike back to the shop I bought it from, to have some repairs carried out, and have been quoted £130!
I realise that I'd save a fortune if I learned how to carry out these repairs myself but that's just not going to happen.
I'm starting to think that I'd be better off buying a cheap bike, riding it into the ground, until it gives up the ghost, and then buying a another cheap one.
I see Muddy Fox Mountain bikes advertised for £150, or those Chinese Single Speed/Fixed Gear bikes go for under £200. How bad can they be? lol.
It may seem like I'm being petty but I'm a single parent on a tight financial budget.

It's 'defence' in the UK, and 'as opposed to'. If you want to be a condescending cunt, work on improving your written English first; like I did.
In my defense, I AM American. 'Oppose' was a typo but I wasn't expecting to have my post marked by a literary genius.
My spelling of 'criticizing', in a later post is also incorrect in the UK.
If you want to be a condescending cunt and grammar check posts, please correct all, or none.
Love you X -
You didn't post an opinion: it was a criticism of the advice previously offered (to buy 2nd hand).
Chain's and cassettes are consumable items, so whether you buy a 2nd hand bike or a new one, they will need replacement.
Why you think a used bike will probably need a new crank is anyone's guess.
Perhaps the advice to buy 2nd hand needs clarification: "don't buy a fucked 2nd hand bike".
I think the advice to buy S/H is fine but somebody with limited knowledge should be aware that there could be untold problems with a S/H bike. It's not the answer for anybody who doesn't know what problems to look for.

Well it has been two years since the OP, so probably yeah.
On the basis of this, your one and only post since joining two years ago, I would have to agree.
Just offering an opinion, as oppose to criticizing, for the sake of criticizing.
I'm sure you've posted hundreds of times and each and every one was as helpful as this one! Enjoy the rest of your busy weekend. Take care -
In his defense, Woolley did ask for sensible replies, as oppose to abuse!
It's all very well advising he buy a S/H bike but if not immediately, how long before he's forced to buy a new chain, cassette and probably crank, costing him an additional £100.
I'm sure he's sorted himself out by now but helpful advice would've been nice. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to be of any help.
Thanks all for your advice.
I've gone to a third LBS who is in the process of renewing my chainring (Good call farewell and jonny69).
It does make sense, so I'm hoping it will solve the problem. Will update.
Unfortunately, it also means renewing the freewheel, and chain, which are both less than a month old but hey ho!
