Do you think you'll need gears?
I have a suspicion you'd find that genesis a bit of a lump. You can buy parts with CTW, right? How about a single speed (or fixed) Surly Crosscheck? Keep it lean.
technically no, I do the ride currently fixed but it is sometimes a mission across the chilterns.
has to be a complete bike apparently. been thinking about getting something like a CAADX 6 for 800 from evans and converting it to single speed.

Assuming you are looking at the £1k mark from the price of that Gen.
I think that is the problem to be honest, too much choice, especially with all next years bikes coming out. I've never had a geared bike or a bike with brakes, and never even sat on a CX bike. I have no idea what I should be looking for. I've got the full 1k but don't want to spend it on some overpriced heap.

winter commutocross bike is what i'm after, currently doing a 30 mile commute on country roads and gravel cycle paths and my bike is taking a battering, maybe i'll see if evans will get me one in for a test ride.
