I have a morbid fear of my stem snapping and being left hurtling along like some Harold Lloyd / Laurel & Hardy movie with my bars separate from my bike.

If you're building it yourself, allow some cost for tools if you don't already have them, although taking them apart is the tricky bit (crank pullers, chainwhip, etc). Also, there are certain buts that you might want to leave to the pros e.g. Wheel building, fitting headsets, etc so allow some cash for that.

I used to piss about with my GR all the time (my bike was second hand and came with 4 chainrings and a bunch of sprockets) but I seem to have settled on 49/17. It's either the best or I'm just bored of playing with the cool-looking chainwhip.
