At around 19st (not all fat, thankfully!), hills are not my friend and I'm living in the middle of the Surrey Hills, but for one reason or another I've standardised on 53/39 chainrings with 11-28 cassettes (Shimano) and I can get up White Down and Leith hill while seated... One big advantage I find over the compact 50/34 I used to have on my bike is that I do most of my rides spinning at a cadence of 90-100 using the 39 ring without needing to use the 11 or 12 sprockets, thus avoiding the chainline issues. I only ever used the 34 ring going up hills before as it was a bit too spinny on anything else.
Hope that is of some help in your decisions....

A very lovely looking and very lovely to ride Scapin Atec frame from a very famous maker - yours for £250, plenty of pictures if you follow the thread and links. It has a Shimano external cup BB which is what I think you will need and I'll throw in a quill stem and seat post if you want them too...
lovely Italian steel.....
Cheers,
Mike

Reluctantly, I need to sell this frame bought from this thread http://www.lfgss.com/thread75589.html which has very good photos and info. I built it up and rode it a few times - it rides beautifully, but it got overtaken in my affections by a Masi Prestige and as we are moving soon, I apparently have to sell it!
The frame is in the same condition as in the original thread and it now has a Shimano external bottom bracket fitted for a modern chainset. Frameset tubing is Columbus Chromor and the chroming is beautiful.
£250 and she is yours, collected from Worcester Park (few miles south of Wimbledon, close to New Malden) or posted at cost.

Well, here she is - rides like a dream (the nice sort of dream!).
Completely refurbished frame I bought from the forum via a wanted ad from nstr_bangor. Built it with mostly modern kit - Ultegra 6600 groupset, 3TTT stem and Ergo Power Due bars, Shimano 600 aero seatpost, Rolls saddle. Wheels are Dura-Ace hubs laced to Ambrosio Nemesis (La Reine duNord) rims with DT revolution spokes and sexy gold nipples. Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubs.
I did think of building with period correct groupset etc, but in the end decided that modern rideability meant more to me than having a completely retro bike for nice sunny days...

and the braze on front mech hanger on my Masi Prestige frame is too far up the seat tube to run a compact chainset - my favourite mechanic an I tried, so I have no choice on this bike anyway!
