On country roads early in the morning most drivers aren't expecting to stop within the distance they can see. If they come around a bend and find me in the middle of thelane at a 50mph differential..... I currently position myself about half way between kerb and centre of the lane - feels like I have some room to move if I have to but at least once a week I get some cnut who howls past so I nearly shit myself.

I'm doing a lot more road biking and will probably do some more sportive type stuff. I wear ordinary shorts (padded underwear) a base layer and a windproof in an attempt not to look like some Tour de France wannabe when I can't pedal for shit.
Is there some gear I can wear that' s comfortable, doesn't flap around like hell yet doesn't make me feel like a twat (I'm closer to 50 than I care) as I would if skin tight lycra from head to foot.

Seems I can't manage anywhere near the gearing everyone seems to run. I worked out I ran 71 gear inches last night and my knees are killing me today. Generally I try to select a gear lower than I think on my normal road bike and like to be at a cadence of 100-110 or so. Looks like I want about 58-60 gear inches which looks to be 48/21 or 44/20 and seems nuts compared to you all. Maybe I should just stick to gears.....

I'd like to try fixed(to improve my fitness and to try something new but before I took the plunge I took my crosstrail hybrid out in 'fixed mode at 48-18. It wears 700c 28 continentals at present and weighs about 27lb. I did a 9mile circuit at about 16.5mph average. Gearing Cadence felt slow although when I counted it was around the 70-80 range.
Bike I'm interested in is a Boardman (found one cheap) fixed which comes 48-16. The lighter weight (8lb odd), better position and narrower tyres will no doubt help but it feels like I want to stick a 20 on the back at the moment (or bigger) or stick with gears
Bike will be used for fitness and once a week to work (56mile round trip) with some loong hills.

Not having the time or skill I'm in the market for what is probably a deeply unfashionable style of fixed (ie extremely non urban). Being in the sticks I'm after a normal style road bike with drops, front and rear normal brakes, decent steel frame and normal style wheels for 23s or similar. Size 57/58cm
Anyone?
